Palestinian rights groups revealed yesterday that the Israeli Salem military court has decided to release 13-year-old Palestinian schoolgirl, Baraa Owisi, who was arrested at an Israeli checkpoint in Qalqilia city.
Israeli soldiers claimed that the child’s schoolbag posed a threat to them, as she was attempting to cross the checkpoint to attend her school.
The court refused pleas to release her even after it was clear that the child posed no threat to the soldiers at the checkpoint as they claimed.

The Prisoners’ Club noted that Owisi is still held in an Israeli hospital and is receiving treatment after she was shot at the checkpoint. The club’s lawyer will visit her soon.
Rami Owisi, the child’s uncle, said the family was shocked to learn about her being shot, noting that she was going to her school as usual. He noted that the health condition of his niece is still unknown to the family.

Owisi added that his sister, Rasha Owisi, was shot dead last year at the same checkpoint after Israeli soldiers claimed she attempted to carry out a stabbing attack, which the family refuted.
