Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners were assaulted and injured by Israeli prison guards, Sunday night, in the Negev prison in southern Israel, after two prisoners allegedly carried out a stabbing attack against two Israeli prison guards.

Sources told Ma’an that hundreds of prisoners were assaulted and injured. Those injured were transferred to the Soroka Medical Center for treatment.

Israeli Prison Services (IPS) raided sections 5, 7 and 3 of the prison and assaulted prisoners.

Prisoners told Ma’an that Israeli guards assaulted prisoners while they were being transferred from section 4 to sections 3 and 7, provoking prisoners who then attacked and stabbed two Israeli guards.

Head of the Prisoners and Former Prisoners’ Affairs Committee, Qadri Abu Baker, told the Palestinian Authority (PA)-owned Wafa News and Information Agency that two Palestinian prisoners, identified as Islam Yusri Wishahi and Udayy Adel Salem, were critically injured.

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) warned of the gravity of the incident, holding the Israeli Prison Services entirely responsible for assaults against prisoners.

There are some 1,300 Palestinian prisoners in different sections of the Negev prison.
