A Palestinian girl was shot dead by Israeli army troops in the occupied West Bank after attempting to stab an Israeli soldier, the Israeli army announced Saturday.

According to army spokesmen, the assailant was shot after she tried to stab an Israeli soldier near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the West Bank city of Hebron (Al-Khalil).

They added that the assailant – a Palestinian girl – had succumbed to gunshot injuries soon afterward.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that Kelsar al-Owewi, 18, had been shot dead by Israeli army troops at a checkpoint near the Ibrahimi Mosque.

According to ministry figures, Saturday’s death brings the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli troops since October 1 of last year to 171, including 35 minors.

Over the same period, around 15,000 Palestinians have been injured, roughly half of them by rubber bullets and heavy ammunition, the ministry added.
