Jailed Palestinians Hunger Strike Case to Go to UN: Meshaal

Hamas Political Bureau Chief Khaled Meshaal says the case of the ongoing mass hunger strike by Palestinians in Israeli jails will be referred to the UN.

Meshaal said in Cairo on Sunday that he had agreed on the issue with the acting Palestinian Authority chief, Mahmoud Abbas and the Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi, reported English-language Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star.

Earlier in the day, the AL chief and Hamas leader held talks in the Egyptian capital to discuss the Israeli-jailed Palestinians’ mass hunger strike.

Al-Arabi has denounced Israeli detention policies as being inhumane and in violation of human rights.

Around 2000 Palestinian prisoners have gone on hunger strike in Israeli prisons, with more detainees pledging to join the protest movement next week, according to Palestinian organizations in Ramallah, West Bank.

Some 3500 Palestinian inmates refused meals on "Prisoners Day" on April 17.

The strike was organized by inmates loyal to the Palestinian resistance movement, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the second largest organization in the umbrella group of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The protest action is underway mainly in protest against Israel’s “administrative detention” rules, use of solitary confinement, denial of family visits, and maltreatment of sick detainees.

The administrative detention rules allow the Israeli forces to arrest and incarcerate Palestinians without charge, trial or even without any information about accusations or evidence against them.

According to Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and prisoner advocacy groups, there are currently over 6,000 Palestinian prisoners, including legislators, in Israeli jails, many of whom have been rounded up without charge or trial.
