Palestinians worldwide, and their supporters yesterday marked the 44th anniversary of the assassination of Ghassan Kanafani by Israel in Beirut in 1972 by planting explosives in his car. Kanafani’s niece Lamees Nijim, 17, was killed with him.
Kanafani was born in 1936 to a Palestinian family in Acre, and was expelled along with his family during the Nakba to Sidon in 1948. He contributed a number of short stories and novels that are still widely read. His works include Men in the Sun and Returning to Haifa.

Kanafani won a number of literary awards such as Friends of the Book Award in 1966 in Lebanon, and was awarded the Medal of Jerusalem in 1990.
After his assassination, Kanafani’s body was unrecognizable, yet today, all Palestinians and their supporters worldwide revere him.
