Residents of the village of Silwad in the occupied West Bank district of Ramallah held a funeral on Friday for a mentally handicapped Palestinian man who was shot earlier in the day by Israeli forces.

Iyad Zakariya Hamed, who was 38-years-old, was shot dead by Israeli forces near the illegal Israeli Ofra settlement at the western entrance to the village of Silwad. His body was released hours later at the al-Jib checkpoint.

Israeli media had initially reported that Hamed opened fire at Israeli soldiers, prompting the soldiers to shoot back. However, it was later reported that Hamed was unarmed at the time of the incident.

According to Israeli media, the Israeli military ruled that Hamed was not planning or attempting an attack on the Israeli soldiers stationed nearby.

An Israeli army spokesperson said she would look into reports for details.

Israel has come under repeated criticism for failing to carry out due process in response to alleged and actual attacks, particularly in regard to the apparent extrajudicial executions of Palestinians who did not pose a threat when they were killed.

  1. My prayers are forever with Palestine. May Allah protect and provide for them. May He bring justice to those who bring harm to them. May He forgive those who have died and give them a place in the highest part of jannah.
