US Criticizes UN Report on Gaza War Crimes

The United States has criticized a United Nations investigator’s report on war crimes which were committed during the Gaza war.

"The United States is reviewing very carefully what is a very lengthy document," Reuters quoted US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice as saying on Thursday.

"We have very serious concerns about many of the recommendations in the report," she added.

The report was unveiled by South African jurist Richard Goldstone in New York this week.

According to the report, Israel used disproportionate force against the Palestinian population in Gaza.

The UN report has also said that both the Israeli army and Palestinian fighters committed war crimes, and possibly crimes against humanity, during the December-January war in the Gaza Strip.

It urges the UN Security Council to refer the charges to the International Criminal Court in The Hague if either Israel or Palestinian authorities fail to investigate the matter within six months.

Goldstone’s mission was organized by the UN Human Rights Council.

The 575-page document has been rejected by both Israel and Hamas.
