Video: The General’s Son

Dec 27 2012 / 2:02 am

Miko Peled is a peace activist. Born in Jerusalem in 1961 into a well-known Zionist family, his grandfather, Dr. Avraham Katsnelson was a Zionist leader and signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. His Father, Matti Peled, was a young officer in the war of 1948 and a general in the war of 1967 when Israel conquered the West Bank, Gaza, Golan Heights and Sinai.

Miko’s unlikely opinions reflect his father’s legacy. General Peled was a war hero turned peacemaker. Miko grew up in Jerusalem, a multi-ethnic city, but had to leave Israel before he made his first Palestinian friend, the result of his participation in a dialogue group in California. He was 39. On September 4, 1997 the beloved Smadar, 13, the daughter of Miko’s sister Nurit and her husband Rami Elhanan was killed in a suicide attack.

Peled insists that Israel/Palestine is one state—the separation wall notwithstanding, massive investment in infrastructure, towns and highways that bisect and connect settlements on the West Bank, have destroyed the possibility for a viable Palestinian state. The result, Peled says is that Israelis and Palestinians are governed by the same government but live under different sets of laws. At the heart of Peled’s conclusion lies the realization that Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace as equals in their shared homeland.

Thank you Miko for your clear explanation of the historical facts and your vision. Hope that many people will be able to listen to your sense making story or read your book. You have to be brave as an Israeli to come forward with the facts . But know that you will bring the time for a solution closer; for the Palestinians as for the Jewish people. I will send on your video to many friends and recommend your book. Thanks again, Miko Peled!

One last Appeal before a Bedouin Village in the Negev is Demolished and a Jewish Town is Built in Its Place

The Bedouin village of Umm el-Hieran in Israel’s southern Negev desert is running out of time and appeals before it will be razed to the ground and an exclusively Jewish town will be built in its place. After a decade of legal battles—a matrix of court cases over lands, houses, and demolition orders—the Bedouins now have one final petition at their disposal, a re-trial. If they lose this hearing their township... More →

Levitas was laid to rest the next day in Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl military cemetery. - Because the fighting was still ongoing, his fellow soldiers were still... More →

When will Israel Stop Seeing Palestinians as a 'Demographic Threat?'

Last week, Haaretz’s Ofer Aderet reported about the auctioning of a letter written by Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, to then-Haifa Mayor Abba Hushi. In the letter Ben-Gurion rejected attempts to allow Palestinian Arabs to return to Haifa after fleeing during the 1948 war, stating that “until the war is over, we don’t want a return of the enemy.” - While the letter does not reveal anything... Israeli Propaganda Dominates front Page of New York Times

Did you get the New York Times today? Hasbara Central took over the front page of the country’s leading newspaper. This article, along with a gigantic photo, fills the top of the front page: “Aided by the Sea, Israel Overcomes an Old Foe: Drought,” by Isabel Kershner. The url says it even better: “water-revolution-in-israel-overcomes-any-threat-of-drought.html.” - Do I even need to spell it out? Here’s the... More →
