On Thursday evening, the Israeli army launched a series of air raids on the towns of Tyre, Taybeh, Aita al-Jabal and Zawtar al-Sharqiyah in southern Lebanon, shortly after warning residents in several areas to evacuate their homes ahead of imminent strikes. The bombardment, described by Lebanese media as the broadest since the November 2024 ceasefire, caused powerful explosions and fires, with thick smoke rising above densely populated areas.

The Lebanese News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes targeted a building in Tyre (Tyre district), another in Taybeh (Marjeyoun district), a third in Aita al-Jabal (Bint Jbeil district), and a fourth in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah (Nabatieh district). Israeli Channel 12 noted that loud explosions were also heard in the Upper Galilee and the occupied Golan Heights as a result of the strikes.

Earlier on Thursday, the Israeli army ordered residents of buildings in three villages in South Lebanon to evacuate, despite the ceasefire agreement in place since late 2024. Military spokesperson Avichay Adraee shared maps marking buildings to be targeted in Aita al-Jabal, al-Taybeh, and Tayr Debba, and warned residents to stay at least 500 meters away from the locations.

“Urgent warning to residents of southern Lebanon, we will attack military infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah across southern Lebanon,” Adraee posted on X, claiming the strikes aim to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its capabilities in the area. A specific warning was issued to residents of Kafr Dunin.

One Killed in Airstrike

Earlier in the day, an Israeli airstrike between the towns of Toura and Aabbasiyyeh in the Tyre district killed one person and injured three others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The attack caused panic among students in nearby schools.

The Israeli army claimed it targeted Hezbollah operators working within a construction unit allegedly rebuilding damaged infrastructure.

Hezbollah Affirms ‘Right to Resist’

The Hezbollah movement called on Thursday for unifying Lebanese ranks against Israeli violations in south Lebanon, rejecting any political negotiations with Tel Aviv.

“The current stage requires national unity to confront aggression and reject any slide toward new political negotiations with the enemy,” Hezbollah said in an open letter to President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, and the Lebanese people, Anadolu reported.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to “national understanding, the protection of sovereignty, and the preservation of security and stability in Lebanon” under a ceasefire agreement reached with Israel late 2024.

“Lebanon and Hezbollah have abided by the provisions of UN Resolution 1701 since its adoption, while the Zionist (Israeli) enemy has continued its land, sea, and air violations,” it said.

Disarmament

Under the ceasefire, the Israeli army was supposed to withdraw from south Lebanon this January, but it only partially pulled out and continues to maintain a military presence at five border outposts.

The Israeli army carries out daily airstrikes across Lebanese territory in violation of the ceasefire deal.

“Israel has not complied with the cessation of hostilities agreement but has continued political blackmail attempts and efforts to impose conditions that serve its interests,” Hezbollah said.

It stressed that a Lebanese government plan for arms monopoly must be part of “a comprehensive national strategy for defense and sovereignty protection,” rather than being a result of “external pressures.”

“The Israeli enemy does not target Hezbollah alone but Lebanon in all its components,” Hezbollah said, stressing that it has “a legitimate right to resist occupation and aggression alongside the army and the people.”

Rising Tensions

On August 5, the Lebanese government approved a plan, based on a draft proposal presented by US Special Envoy Tom Barrack, to place all weapons – including those held by Hezbollah – under state control and tasked the army with drafting and implementing the plan before the end of 2025.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has repeatedly rejected the move and insists that Israeli forces must fully withdraw from Lebanese territory before laying down arms.

The Lebanese Cabinet is set to convene on Thursday to discuss the second briefing report by the army on the disarmament process.

Tensions have been mounting in South Lebanon for weeks, with the Israeli army intensifying near-daily air raids inside Lebanese territory despite the ceasefire deal that has been in place since November 2024, under the pretext of targeting Hezbollah members and infrastructure.

The Israeli army has killed more than 4,000 people and injured nearly 17,000 in its attacks on Lebanon, which began in October 2023 and turned into a full-scale offensive in September 2024.
