Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s Defense Minister, said he would support Elor Azaria, the Israeli soldier who shot wounded Palestinian, Abdel Fattah al-Sharif, while he lay injured and bleeding on the ground after he attempted to attack a group of Israeli soldiers.

Lieberman added during a conference he spoke at in Herzliya that, “These Israeli soldiers in uniform, who protect Israel, are the messengers of Israel and should not be attacked by politicians.”

He added that any criticisms directed at the Israeli army should be relayed to the Minister of Security, and the Israeli army should be immune to any political argument.”

Azaria shot Alsharif dead in Tal Alromaydia neighborhood of Hebron on March 24, 2016, as he lay on the ground injured and bleeding. The shooting was recorded by the Israeli human rights organization, B’Tselem, causing much debate on social media and within the Israeli army.
