Iran Announces US Frigate Hit near Hormuz

Fars News Agency reported on Monday that a US frigate was struck by two missiles after allegedly ignoring Iranian warnings near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the report, the vessel attempted to cross the Strait and violated “traffic and navigation security” near the Iranian port city of Jask.

Fars reported that the frigate halted its course after sustaining damage and was forced to retreat from the area.

No further details were released regarding the extent of the damage or possible casualties aboard the vessel.

Iran Reasserts Control over Strait

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officials reiterated that there has been “no change” in Iran’s management of the Strait of Hormuz.

A spokesperson for the Revolutionary Guard warned that any maritime movement failing to comply with Iranian mechanisms and protocols would face “serious repercussions.”

The Guard said non-military vessels operating according to Iranian-designated routes would continue to transit safely.

Iranian state media also reported that the Revolutionary Guard Navy published an updated map outlining waters under its operational control in the Strait.

According to Reuters news agency, the zone reportedly stretches from western Qeshm Island toward Umm Al Quwain in the west and extends eastward toward Fujairah.

Reuters noted it remains unclear whether Iran has formally expanded its claimed operational zone.

‘No Crossing without Coordination’

Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters announced in a statement that Iranian forces would oversee security throughout the Strait of Hormuz.

The headquarters warned that “there will be no crossing through Hormuz without coordination.”

Iranian military officials stated that commercial ships and oil tankers must coordinate directly with Iranian forces before transiting the waterway.

The statement also warned that any foreign military force — “especially the US military” — approaching the Strait could face attack.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei argued that the Strait of Hormuz “was a safe waterway before the war,” accusing Washington of contributing to maritime instability in the region.

“Ships and companies should know that ensuring security requires coordination with the relevant authorities in Iran,” Baghaei said.

US Naval Operation Continues

The developments come after US President Donald Trump announced “Project Freedom,” a US-led naval initiative aimed at assisting vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran Rejects ‘Project Freedom,’ Warns Hormuz Security is under Iranian Control

United States Central Command said the operation includes guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, and approximately 15,000 personnel.

According to Axios, the US Navy is providing commercial vessels with information regarding safer maritime lanes believed to be clear of Iranian naval mines.

Axios also quoted US officials saying American naval vessels remain nearby in case Iranian forces attempt to target commercial shipping.

One source described the operation as the beginning of a potentially wider confrontation with Iran.

The maritime escalation comes amid continued deadlock in indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Iran recently submitted a 14-point proposal through Pakistani mediation outlining conditions for ending the war and restructuring maritime arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz.
