Protesters rallied outside France Télévisions demanding restoration of a removed program after actress Adèle Haenel denounced Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Key Developments

  • Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside France Télévisions’ Paris headquarters to demand the restoration of a removed France 5 program replay.
  • During the September 9 broadcast, French actress Adèle Haenel said Israel was committing genocide in Palestine and accused France of complicity.
  • France Télévisions said it removed the replay as a precaution while awaiting a review by France’s audiovisual regulator, Arcom.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the headquarters of France Télévisions in Paris to protest the removal of a program featuring French actress Adèle Haenel’s remarks on Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

The demonstration was organized following a call by EuroPalestine, with participants demanding that the public broadcaster restore the replay of the France 5 literary program La Grande Librairie.

The program, originally broadcast on September 9, was subsequently removed from the France Télévisions website.

Demonstrators accused the public broadcasting group of censorship and publicly repeated the remarks that Haenel had made during the program.

One protester read the actress’s intervention outside the France Télévisions headquarters.

Several demonstrators carried signs reproducing Haenel’s statement:

“The State of Israel is committing genocide in Palestine and France is complicit.”

Other signs read, “Silence kills,” “We want the replay of Adèle Haenel” and “Stop censorship.”

The protesters demanded the restoration of the complete program and argued that removing the replay had prevented viewers from accessing Haenel’s political intervention after its original broadcast.

France’s Complicity

Haenel delivered the remarks during the September 9 edition of La Grande Librairie, which was broadcast on France 5.

The actress said she had “made a decision” to speak publicly about Israel’s actions in Gaza and the French government’s position.

“The State of Israel is committing genocide in Palestine, and France is complicit,” Haenel said.

“Don’t accept the unacceptable; sanction Israel and liberate Palestine,” she continued.

Her statement was broadcast during the original program. The censorship accusations emerged after the replay was removed from the broadcaster’s online platform.

The removal prompted criticism from French politicians and pro-Palestinian activists, who questioned why the complete program was no longer available after Haenel’s remarks had already aired.

The protesters focused particularly on the role of France Télévisions as a publicly funded broadcasting organization, arguing that viewers should be able to access the original program.

France Télévisions said it removed the replay as a precaution while awaiting a review by Arcom, France’s audiovisual regulator.

France 5, which broadcast the program, is part of the France Télévisions public broadcasting group.
