Heavy rains flooded displacement camps across Gaza, prompting more than 1,500 distress calls as rescue crews appealed for urgent equipment.
Key Takeaways
- Gaza’s Civil Defense received more than 1,500 distress calls after heavy rains flooded entire displacement camps.
- Two Palestinians were injured when a wall collapsed in northern Gaza. Rescue crews evacuated a separate building in Nuseirat without injuries.
- An estimated 162,000 tents need replacing, while damaged drainage networks and shortages of fuel and equipment are hampering the emergency response.
Entire Displacement Camps Flooded
Heavy rains flooded displacement camps across the Gaza Strip overnight into Saturday, leaving families in waterlogged shelters and sweeping away tents, Gaza’s Civil Defense said.
The agency received more than 1,500 distress calls from residents whose tents and shelters were damaged, Quds News Network reported. Civil Defense said entire camps had flooded since dawn, following repeated appeals for help before the storm arrived.
Eyewitnesses told Anadolu news agency that thousands of tents were flooded near Gaza City’s port, west of Deir al-Balah, north of the Nuseirat refugee camp, and in Jabaliya and Beit Lahia. Many displaced families are sheltering in worn tents without heating or adequate protection from rain and cold after Israel’s genocidal war destroyed homes and civilian infrastructure across the Strip.

Two Injured as Wall Collapses
Two Palestinians were injured in northern Gaza when rain caused a wall to collapse in a building damaged by earlier Israeli shelling, a medical source told Anadolu.
In a separate incident, Civil Defense crews evacuated residents from a three-story building opposite Al-Ahli Club in the Nuseirat refugee camp after strong winds caused part of it to collapse, QNN reported. No injuries were reported.
Civil Defense said it lacked the equipment to pump standing water out of flooded areas and could not respond to the emergency on its own. It appealed to local and international organizations for pumps, machinery, fuel and relief supplies.

More Than 1,000 Displacement Sites at Risk
Muhammad Saleh, general coordinator of Gaza’s NGO network, warned that more than 1,000 displacement sites housing around 1.1 million Palestinians were at risk of flooding, QNN reported.
Humanitarian estimates cited by the outlet put the number of tents needing replacement at approximately 162,000. The Gaza Winter Emergency Committee had previously warned that around 7,800 tents were pitched in hazardous locations.
Many camps sit in low-lying or exposed coastal areas. Damage to sewage and stormwater drainage networks makes flooding worse, while rubble, damaged roads and fuel shortages make it harder for municipal and rescue crews to reach flooded sites and drain the water.
