Key Takeaways

  • The IRGC said two oil tankers attempted to leave the designated route in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Iranian forces said both vessels returned after a fire broke out aboard one tanker.
  • Tehran warned the Strait would remain closed while US military intervention continues.

Two Tankers Forced Back

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said two oil tankers attempted to leave the designated navigation route south of the Strait of Hormuz with the encouragement of US military aircraft before returning after an onboard fire broke out.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the IRGC said the incident occurred overnight.

“After a major fire broke out on one of the two vessels that took the unsafe route in Hormuz, both ships quickly returned,” the statement said.

The IRGC did not identify the vessels or provide additional details regarding the cause of the fire.

‘The Strait of Hormuz is Our Territory’

The Revolutionary Guard reiterated that Iranian naval forces maintain full control over the strategic waterway.

“The Strait of Hormuz is our territory, and the IRGC naval forces are imposing their control over it with full authority,” the statement said.

The force also praised the Iranian public for what it described as its steadfastness during the ongoing confrontation with the United States.

“O proud Iranian people, your determination and steadfastness on the battlefield have disrupted the enemy front and strengthened the ranks of the Islamic fighters,” the statement added.

Warning to Washington and Its Allies

The IRGC warned that foreign powers would not be permitted to interfere in the region.

“A foreigner who has come from thousands of kilometers away will not be allowed to interfere, and the aggressor will be punished on the same day,” it said.

The statement also warned countries supporting US military operations that they could face retaliation.

“Countries that participate in assisting the aggressor will receive a harsh response if they do not correct their behavior,” the IRGC said.

Strait to Remain Closed

The Revolutionary Guard said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed while the United States continued what it described as interference in maritime navigation.

“The Strait of Hormuz will not be able to be reopened as long as the arrogant statements of US officials and their interference in maritime navigation continue,” the statement said.

It added that continued US threats and intervention would only further escalate the situation.

“Threats and interference will only make the situation more difficult and complicated,” the statement read.

The statement comes hours after the US resumed military strikes on Iran following a five-day pause.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the renewed attacks were launched in response to Iran’s ballistic missile strike targeting a US military base and CENTCOM headquarters in Jordan, marking another escalation in the expanding regional confrontation.
