Israel barred two foreign physicians from Gaza and turned back a truck of baby formula, as the UN confirmed famine in Gaza.
Israel has barred two foreign physicians from the United States and France from entering the Gaza Strip, in a move that underscores Israel’s growing restrictions on humanitarian workers and supplies amid the ongoing genocide, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.
Dr. Mimi Syed, a US physician, and Dr. Catherine Le Scolan-Quéré, a French general practitioner, were supposed to cross into Gaza on Thursday to volunteer in local hospitals. But on Wednesday evening, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) informed them that, on orders from the Shin Bet security service, they would not be allowed to enter.
Both doctors had previously volunteered in Gaza during the war—Syed in August and December 2024, and Le Scolan-Quéré in December 2024—through a US-based charity that sends medical professionals to conflict zones.
Syed told Haaretz she believed the decision was linked to her public criticism of Israeli military conduct in Gaza after her earlier missions.
“They don’t let journalists enter, and they kill the Gazan journalists who are there, so the doctors who come there reveal the truth to the world,” she said. “But they don’t want us to tell about what is happening in Gaza – especially now, when they’re planning to invade Gaza City.”
In an interview with the Palestine Chronicle last June, Dr. Syed said that “people like myself and my colleagues are being scared into being silent, our licenses, our careers, our physical safety.” However, she said she refuses to comply.
“I will use every energy, every ounce of energy in my body to speak out against this,” Dr. Syed said, adding: “Shooting children in the head is wrong; starvation is wrong”.
Baby Formula Denied
On the same day, according to Haaretz, a truck carrying baby formula bound for Gaza was turned back at the border.
The shipment was organized by Israeli and American volunteers working to reduce child hunger in the enclave. But when it reached the crossing, Israeli authorities reportedly told the driver it could not pass because the truck was “open” rather than sealed.
On Friday, famine was confirmed in Gaza City and its surrounding areas for the first time, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres calling it “a man-made disaster” and “a failure of humanity itself.”
According to the latest results of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis, famine (IPC Phase 5), “with reasonable evidence,” is confirmed in Gaza Governorate, as of August 15.
