The hospital director’s warning follows the killing of Al-Jazeera journalists Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqea in an airstrike on Sunday evening.
Israel has killed Al-Jazeera’s journalists in the Gaza Strip in preparation for “a major massacre” that it does not want to be covered by the media, Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of al-Shifa Hospital, has warned.
“We fear that we will die and no one will hear about us. Israel’s killing of journalists indicates that it is planning something big for Gaza City,” Abu Salmiya told Al-Jazeera on Monday. This follows the killing of Al-Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqea, along with three of their colleagues, in an airstrike that targeted their tent, situated just outside the hospital in Gaza City, late on Sunday evening.

“This is what we fear: that the occupation is preparing for a major massacre in Gaza, but this time without broadcasting it in sound or image,” Dr. Abu Salmiya stated. “It wants to kill and displace the largest number of Palestinians in Gaza City, but this time without the voices of Anas, Mohammed, Al-Jazeera, and all the satellite channels.”
Call to International Press
Dr. Abu Salmiya reportedly said that the killing of journalists and medical personnel in Gaza was one of the hallmarks of Israel’s ongoing genocidal assault on the besieged enclave.

The doctor called on the international press to immediately pressure Israel to prevent this crime from going unnoticed and stressed that journalists in Gaza will continue to report the truth.
According to Al-Jazeera, the strike also killed cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Moamen Aliwa, as well as their assistant Mohammed Nofal. Another journalist, Mohammed al-Khalidi, also died of his wounds, the report noted, citing Gaza’s Government Media Office.
Al-Sharif’s Last Post
In his last post on X, shortly before his killing, al-Sharif shared that Israel’s aggression on Gaza City had “intensified” accompanied by a video in which bombings could be heard.
“Relentless bombardment … For two hours, the Israeli aggression has intensified on Gaza City,” al-Sharif wrote.

The 28-year-old, from Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, previously survived multiple threats from Israeli forces, including phone calls ordering him to halt coverage.
In a statement issued shortly after the raid, the Israeli occupation army admitted targeting al-Sharif, claiming he was a “Hamas terrorist.”
Rising Death Toll
Since Israel’s reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, it has killed and wounded thousands of Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip through a bloody and ongoing aerial bombardment.
On October 7, 2023, following a Palestinian Resistance operation in southern Israel, the Israeli military launched a genocidal war against the Palestinians, killing over 61,000, wounding more than 153,000, with over 14,000 still missing.
