The Hezbollah movement has urged the Lebanese government to reject Israel’s threats to disarm the group amid fears of Israeli escalation in Lebanon.

Two people were killed on Thursday when an Israeli drone struck a minibus in eastern Lebanon, in a new violation of a ceasefire agreement in place since last year, Lebanese media reported.

The state news agency NNA said that the drone hit the vehicle on the Hosh al-Sayyed Ali road in the Hermel district.

Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee claimed on X that the strike targeted what he called a “terrorist element” in al-Nasiriyah in eastern Lebanon.

Earlier on Thursday, Israeli aircraft reportedly dropped explosive devices over the town of Houla in south Lebanon, the Beirut-based Al Mayadeen network reported. The attack damaged an excavator and several vehicles in the area. Israeli occupation forces also carried out a ground incursion into the town and demolished a building.

Earlier Attacks

The attack came hours after a passerby was injured in an Israeli drone strike targeting a car in the town of Jannata in the Tyre district of south Lebanon late on Wednesday.

Al Mayadeen reported that Israeli aircraft also targeted the Tebna area in the Saida district, while at least six airstrikes were also carried out in the Iqlim al-Tuffah region.

Over 4,000 Killed

Israel and Lebanon reached a ceasefire in November 2024 after more than a year of cross-border attacks amid the war in Gaza. More than 4,000 people were killed, and 17,000 others were injured.

Under the ceasefire, Israeli forces were supposed to withdraw from southern Lebanon in January but have only partially pulled out, maintaining a military presence at five border outposts.

Call from Hezbollah

The Hezbollah movement on Wednesday urged the Lebanese government to reject Israel’s threats to disarm the group amid fears of Israeli escalation in Lebanon.

“The national priority is to end the Israeli occupation of the territory from which the (Israeli) enemy has not withdrawn, despite the November 27 ceasefire agreement,” Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc said in a statement.

“The authorities in Lebanon must act decisively and avoid slipping into implementing conditions imposed by the enemy to humiliate our army and people and violate our sovereignty,” it added.

“The Lebanese people have the right to resist the occupation if it continues, and this is a legitimate right that needs no further validation.”

The statement comes as Tel Aviv has conditioned halting its attacks in Lebanon to the implementing a Lebanese government plan to disarm Hezbollah by the end of this year, a deadline that is only days away.

Hezbollah called for pressure on Israel to abide by its obligations under the ceasefire deal “without delay or conditions.”
