Spain’s acting Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, called on European countries to sever diplomatic relations with Israel and impose an arms embargo and economic sanctions.

In a video posted on X on Wednesday, Belarra said that European states should act to “stop the genocide in Palestine” and that Israeli political leaders should be brought before the International Criminal Court.

“There are four things that European countries should do immediately”, Belarra said.

She described these steps as follows:

“First, suspend diplomatic relations with the state of Israel.

“Second, implement strong economic sanctions as was done with Putin.

“Third, impose an arms embargo.

“Fourth, as was also done in the case of the war in Ukraine, bring Netanyahu and all political leaders responsible for carrying out bombings against the civilian population before the International Criminal Court.”

Commenting on Israel’s decision to suspend visas for United Nations personnel, Belarra said in the video that “this is the result of the fact that neither Netanyahu nor the state of Israel have been held accountable for their illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory in recent decades.”

Since the beginning of the war, on October 7, Israeli airstrikes have killed 7,028 Palestinian civilians in the besieged Gaza Strip, including 2,913 children and 1,709 women.
