Sweden’s war crimes unit has received more than 700 reports from Gaza since 2023, launching multiple investigations that could feed into cases in Sweden, other countries, or at the International Criminal Court.

Radio Sweden reported on Tuesday that Sweden’s police task force dedicated to investigating war crimes has received more than 700 reports related to Gaza since the start of Israel’s war on the Strip in 2023.

According to the report, the complaints were filed by both organizations and private citizens.

Most concern individuals suspected of being in Gaza and committing offenses there, while others involve leaders or representatives who may not have been physically present in the territory.

Prosecutor Reena Devgun confirmed that several investigations are underway, but did not disclose details about the alleged crimes or whether any of the suspects are Swedish nationals.

She noted that prosecutors are seeking to speak with people who have ties to Sweden, have been in Gaza, or can provide other forms of evidence.

Any testimony collected could be used in legal proceedings in Sweden, in other jurisdictions, or before international bodies such as the International Criminal Court (ICC). Devgun described such evidence as “very valuable.”

Israel has been widely condemned for its genocidal war on Gaza, which has killed nearly 61,600 Palestinians since October 2023.

In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its ongoing assault on the enclave.

Ongoing Genocide

Since Israel’s reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, it has killed and wounded thousands of Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip through a bloody and ongoing aerial bombardment.

On October 7, 2023, following a Palestinian Resistance operation in southern Israel, the Israeli military launched a genocidal war against the Palestinians, killing over 61,000, wounding more than 154,000, with over 14,000 still missing.

Despite habitual condemnation by many countries around the world of the Israeli genocide, little has been done to hold Israel accountable.

Israel is currently under investigation for the crime of genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals — including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — are now officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.

The Israeli genocide has been largely defended, supported, and financed by Washington and a few other Western powers.
