Google Involved in $45M ‘Hasbara’ Campaign Deal with Israel – Report

The campaign began days after Israel blocked food, medicine, fuel and other humanitarian supplies from entering Gaza on March 2.

Google is in the middle of a six-month $45 million contract with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office to promote government messages and downplay the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, according to a report by Drop Site News.

The contract, signed in late June, describes Google as a “key entity” in supporting Netanyahu’s public relations strategy, the outlet reported.

The campaign began days after Israel blocked food, medicine, fuel and other humanitarian supplies from entering Gaza on March 2. Lawmakers questioned officials about whether the government had prepared for the public relations fallout.

A spokesperson for the Israeli army said at the time that authorities could launch a digital campaign “to explain that there is no hunger and present the data.”

Since then, publicly available government contracts “show that Israel’s advertising bureau, which reports to the prime minister’s office,” has embarked “on a mass advertising and public messaging effort to conceal the hunger crisis,” the report stated.

It includes the use of “American influencers” as well as paid advertising, yielding tens of millions for Google, YouTube, X, Meta, and other tech platforms.

‘Food in Gaza’ Advert

Government ads denying famine in Gaza have run widely, including a YouTube video from Israel’s Foreign Ministry that declared “there is food in Gaza. Any other claim is a lie.” The clip has been viewed more than 6 million times, much of it boosted through paid promotion.

Drop Site reported that much of the video’s reach “results from an ad placed during an ongoing and previously unreported $45 million (NIS 150 million) advertising campaign initiated between Google and Netanyahu’s office in late June.”

According to the report, the ads are managed through YouTube and Google’s Display & Video 360 platform and are characterized in government documents as “hasbara” — a Hebrew term often translated as “propaganda.”

Records show that Israel also spent $3 million on ads with the US social media company X and $2.1 million with the French-Israeli platform Outbrain/Teads.

UNRWA Targeted

An Israeli Google ads campaign to discredit the UN Agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, was similarly reported by WIRED last year, Drop Site noted.

Hadas Maimon, head of public awareness for Israel’s diaspora ministry, was cited as stating  during the March 2 Knesset hearing that, “For almost a year now, we have been leading a major campaign on the issue of UNRWA.”

The report further stated that other Israeli government ads on Google’s platforms “accused the United Nations of ‘deliberate sabotage’ of aid delivery into Gaza and promoted the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which is backed by Israel, the U.S., and unnamed European countries”.

Long Overdue Declaration of Famine in Gaza: What Should Happen Now?

One campaign promoted prosecution of the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas, “which governs the Gaza Strip, for debunked allegations of mass sexual violence as a result of a controversial report published by the Israeli advocacy group Dinah Project,” the report stated.

Another campaign also targeted the Brussels-based NGO, Hind Rajab Foundation, which focuses on offensive legal action against “perpetrators, accomplices and inciters” of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestine.

According to Drop Site, several ads “link to an Israeli government report entitled ‘Unmasking the Hind Rajab Foundation,’ which characterizes the organization as having ‘deep connections to extremist ideologies and terrorist organisations, raising serious concerns about its true motives.’”

Ongoing Genocide

Since reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, Israel has continued its bloody aerial bombardment across the Gaza Strip, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinians.

Starting on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military, with American support, launched a genocidal war against the people of Gaza. This campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 64,000 Palestinians, with more than 161,500 wounded. The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.

In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade has caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians—mostly children—with hundreds of thousands more at risk.

Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. The nation is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.

  1. Well, what do you know! Zio-front. If you’re able to get the whole deal off your phone, you’re way ahead in ensuring you’ve got some modicum of privacy.

  2. $45 million worth of lying with Google helping: “Israel” is still losing, but “winning” the Gaza Genocide, Holocaust of our time. No wonder “Israel” is hated.

  3. Add this to the charges before the ICJ-CIJ and the ICC – attempting to pervert the course of justice by plublically lying in matters concerning human lives – something that I think is also punishable by death in Jewish law.
