Hamas Urges Mediators to Act
The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas warned on Saturday that Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe was worsening as the first winter storm flooded displacement camps, and urged ceasefire mediators to press Israel to allow humanitarian aid and shelter supplies into the Strip.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the suffering of displaced families whose tents had flooded was a disgrace to an international community that had failed to compel Israel to lift its siege, Quds News Network reported.
Heavy Rains Flood Gaza’s Displacement Camps, Prompting 1,500 Distress Calls
Qassem held Israel, the Peace Council and its representative, Nikolay Mladenov, responsible for the worsening disaster. He accused the council of failing to ensure that relief reached Gaza and remaining silent over the siege imposed on more than two million Palestinians. He also called on the Arab League to intervene urgently.
70,000 Tents Flooded in 12 Hours
Gaza’s Government Media Office said the storm flooded about 70,000 tents within 12 hours, causing an estimated $3 million in direct losses. It blamed Israeli restrictions on the entry of shelter and reconstruction materials for worsening the disaster.
Civil Defense said entire camps had flooded and crews had received more than 1,500 distress calls. The agency said it lacked the pumps, machinery and fuel to drain flooded areas and respond to collapses in buildings damaged by Israeli bombardment.
Two Palestinians were injured when a wall collapsed in northern Gaza. Rescue crews evacuated residents from a partially collapsed building in Nuseirat and worked to pull a person from the rubble after a roof collapsed in Gaza City’s Al-Zeitoun neighborhood.

PFLP Warns of Further Flooding
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine also said in a statement that the storm offered a first indication of what more than two million Palestinians could face this winter without urgent deliveries of shelter supplies, prefabricated housing and equipment for Civil Defense and infrastructure repairs.
The group called for unhindered aid deliveries and immediate implementation of the International Court of Justice’s provisional measures. It also called for Israel to meet its obligations under the ceasefire agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 2803, saying deliveries of 600 aid trucks a day under the humanitarian protocol were still not guaranteed.
