Leading a militia known as the “Popular Forces,” Abu Shabab operated in areas under Israeli military control.
Yasser Abu Shabab, the militia leader who operated under Israeli supervision in southern Gaza, was killed on December 4, by unknown gunmen in the Strip, according to Israeli media.
His death came weeks after the ceasefire and exchange deal took effect, raising immediate questions about the future of other militias that have worked alongside Israeli occupation forces during the war. Commenting on his death, the Hebrew site Hadashot Yisrael said that now “Hamas will be able to operate freely in Gaza”.

His group received weapons seized from resistance caches. It was incorporated into a wider project overseen by Israel’s internal security service, Shin Bet, designed to create local militias capable of operating where Israeli soldiers could not easily deploy.
These formations were tasked with maintaining Israeli control in certain areas, gathering information, and undermining the influence of resistance groups.
In Gaza, Abu Shabab’s forces were widely accused of exploiting their privileged access to areas under Israeli control to loot humanitarian aid, obstruct its distribution, and intimidate and kill civilians.
Testimonies gathered by Palestinian journalists and aid workers described a systematic pattern in which his men intercepted trucks, seized supplies, and resold or diverted them, deepening the humanitarian collapse in Rafah and surrounding areas.
Internal UN assessments, later cited by The Washington Post, identified Abu Shabab as the leading figure in the network responsible for large-scale aid theft during the genocide. Reports in Israeli media later disclosed that the militia project had been approved at the highest levels, including by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yisrael Katz, and Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir.

It is not an “unknown” gunman; Hamas planned and executed the ambush perfectly. Mind you, this happened in Rafah, an area under the control of the zionist filth who claims that the resistance fighters there are either killed or helplessly stuck in the tunnels. They were lying as usual. Death to the zionists and their collaborators. Freedom to Palestinians and the Middle-East.
