The Jordan Valley constitutes a quarter of the West Bank’s area and is home to approximately 50,000 Palestinians, including the city of Jericho.

The Israeli occupation army announced on Wednesday the formation of a new division in the Jordan Valley, “tasked with protecting the eastern border and preventing a recurrence of the October 7 attack,” according to Al Jazeera Arabic.

The Israeli army reportedly said the division, named Gilad, is tasked with protecting the eastern border in the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea region.

The new division was formed as part of force-building efforts in parallel with the ongoing fighting on several fronts, the report stated.

Home to 50,000 Palestinians

The Jordan Valley extends from Beit She’an in the south to Safed in the north, from Ein Gedi to the Negev in the south, and from the middle of the Jordan River to the eastern slopes of the West Bank in the west. The total area of the Jordan Valley is 720,000 dunams.

The importance of the Jordan Valley lies in its warm and fertile natural area that can be used for agriculture year-round, and its location above the most important water basin in Palestine, the report added.

The Jordan Valley constitutes a quarter of the West Bank’s area and is home to approximately 50,000 Palestinians, including the city of Jericho.

The head of the Israeli Central Command reportedly said that the formation of the new division in the Jordan Valley is part of learning from the difficult lessons of the October 7 Resistance operation.

“We look forward to learning these lessons so that what happened will not be repeated,” he stated.

Ongoing Genocide

Since reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, Israel has continued its bloody aerial bombardment across the Gaza Strip, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinians.

Starting on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military, with American support, launched a genocidal war against the people of Gaza. This campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 64,500 Palestinians, with more than 163,000 wounded. The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.

In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade has caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians—mostly children—with hundreds of thousands more at risk.

Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. The nation is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.
