Fresh Beatings, Medical Neglect in Israeli Prison
New testimony from imprisoned Gaza physician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya has revealed that he remains subjected to repeated beatings, prolonged solitary confinement, and medical neglect inside Israeli detention, prompting renewed calls from human rights organizations for urgent independent intervention.
Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, has been held without charge since December 2024.
His latest testimony describes worsening conditions inside the underground Rekefet prison, where he says the abuse continued even after his lawyer previously documented allegations of violence.
Reports of Renewed Abuse
According to Abu Safiya, prison guards assaulted him again shortly after his previous legal visit, after which he was placed in solitary confinement, where he has remained ever since.
During the most recent visit, lawyer Nasser Odeh was only able to communicate with Abu Safiya through a telephone set apart by a dark partition, while two masked prison guards remained in an adjacent room close enough to hear the conversation, raising concerns about attorney-client confidentiality.
Abu Safiya told his lawyer that he had undergone medical examinations, including X-rays, several days after the previous visit. However, he said he was never informed of the results.
He added that prison authorities provided painkillers for only a few days before discontinuing them without offering any further treatment.

Contradicting Official Claims
The new testimony comes after Israeli authorities told the Supreme Court they had found no indication that Abu Safiya’s life was in danger and stated that he had been examined several times by medical personnel since his transfer to Rekefet prison.
However, authorities have not released the results of those examinations or responded in detail to allegations of severe abuse documented by Odeh following his July 2 prison visit.
Israeli prison authorities have also not complied with requests from Physicians for Human Rights to provide Abu Safiya’s medical records or allow an independent physician to examine him.

Calls for Immediate Intervention
Physicians for Human Rights said the latest reports of renewed violence immediately following Abu Safiya’s previous legal visit reinforce the need for urgent independent medical and legal intervention.
The organization called for guarantees of his safety, immediate access to appropriate medical treatment, his transfer from the underground detention facility, and an end to his solitary confinement.
During the visit, Abu Safiya asked his legal team to do everything possible to secure his transfer from Rekefet prison and his release from isolation.
He also requested an ophthalmological examination, telling his lawyers that he was experiencing problems with his right eye. According to the legal team, his condition was visibly apparent during the visit.
Abu Safiya further appealed for the return of his eyeglasses and for the continuation of pain medication as part of the medical care he says has been denied while in detention.
