A Palestinian man was shot by Israeli occupation forces yesterday outside Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem.

Police sealed off the street while the body of a 26-year-old Palestinian from Qalandia in the occupied West Bank lay dead on the floor.

Israeli forces allege the man had tried to stab a Jewish worshipper outside the walled Old City however this cannot be verified.

An Israeli spokesperson said the man’s presence in the area was illegal due to restrictions on the entry of Palestinians from the West Bank to Jerusalem during Jewish holidays. Jews are observing Yom Kippur and hundreds have raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to hold prayers in the Muslim holy site.

Palestinian witnesses said they saw a young man fleeing, pursued by police who opened fire.
