US, British Artists Back Israeli Boycott

A group of renowned British and American artists have put their weight behind efforts by Israeli actors to refrain from performing in the occupied West Bank.

More than 150 US actors, writers, and directors signed a letter drafted by an American organization known as the Jewish Voice for Peace.

The move came after a group of Israeli artists, actors and academics announced last month that they would boycott performances at the Ariel cultural center in the West Bank as a symbol of their opposition to continued Israeli settlement constructions.

The letter praised "the brave decision not to perform in Ariel."

"They made a wonderful decision and they deserve the respect of people everywhere who dream of justice. We stand with them," according to the letter.

The names on the letter included British Oscar-winning actress and activist Vanessa Redgrave, actress Cynthia Nixon and playwright Tony Kushner.
