Gustavo Petro denounced acceptance of Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe as “anti-human,” reaffirming Colombia’s severing of ties with Israel.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Friday denounced the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip, describing acceptance of the situation as “anti-human.”

“Anyone who accepts this genocide is anti-human; not even beasts would do such a thing,” Petro wrote on X, sharing video footage of Palestinians desperately running toward humanitarian aid convoys. He added that those who condone the atrocities are “simply accomplices” to genocide and “spiritual outcasts from the earth.”

Petro has been one of the most outspoken leaders in Latin America against Israel’s war on Gaza. On May 3, Colombia formally severed diplomatic relations with Israel, accusing it of committing genocide against the Palestinian people. His government also suspended all arms purchases from Israel earlier in the war, ending longstanding military cooperation agreements, and consistently backed international calls for accountability at the United Nations.

Petro has repeatedly aligned Colombia with the growing bloc of countries in the Global South demanding an immediate ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian access, and international legal action against Israeli leaders. His administration has also publicly supported South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

Ongoing Genocide

Since reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, Israel has continued its bloody aerial bombardment across the Gaza Strip, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinians.

Starting on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military, with American support, launched a genocidal war against the people of Gaza. This campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 63,000 Palestinians, with more than 159,000 wounded. The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.

In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade has caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians—mostly children—with hundreds of thousands more at risk.

Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. The nation is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.
