Iran denied targeting Kuwait Airport, describing the allegations as fabrication and blaming the damage on a failed Patriot interceptor.
Key Developments
- Iranian military sources rejected claims that Revolutionary Guard drones or missiles struck Kuwait International Airport.
- The IRGC said its intended target was Ali Al Salem Air Base, which hosts US military assets in Kuwait.
- Iranian officials claimed damage at the airport resulted from a malfunctioning American Patriot interceptor missile.
Iran Rejects Airport Strike Allegations
Iranian military officials on Wednesday denied responsibility for an attack on Kuwait International Airport, dismissing reports and circulated images linking the damage to Iranian drone operations.
Tasnim News Agency quoted an Iranian military source as describing photographs allegedly showing damage caused by an Iranian drone strike as “a flimsy fabrication by the enemy.”
The source argued that the timing and conditions depicted in the circulated material contradicted the timeline of Iran’s military operation.
According to the official, drones launched by the Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted American military sites around midnight.
“The strike also occurred at midnight and under cover of darkness,” the source said, adding that the images being circulated appeared to have been taken in broad daylight.
The source maintained that the discrepancy undermined claims linking the airport damage to Iranian operations.
Distance from Target Cited
Iranian officials also challenged the allegation on technical grounds. According to the military source cited by Tasnim, the target designated by the IRGC Aerospace Force was located more than 40 kilometers from Kuwait International Airport.
The source argued that the distance made any connection between the Iranian operation and the airport damage implausible.
A separate military source quoted by Fars News Agency described the allegations as part of a broader information campaign.
“The enemy’s flimsy fabrication regarding the alleged drone strike indicates a psychological operation and falls within the enemy’s false narrative operations,” the source said.
The official further insisted that the precision of the operation ruled out the possibility that Iranian drones had mistakenly struck the airport.
US Base Was the Target
The denial came hours after Kuwaiti authorities announced that Kuwait International Airport had been attacked, resulting in one death and dozens of injuries.
According to statements carried by the official Telegram channel of the Revolutionary Guard, investigations conducted by Iranian authorities found no evidence that the IRGC Aerospace Force had launched missiles toward the airport’s passenger terminal.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi said the intended target of the operation was Ali Al Salem Air Base, a facility used by US military forces and American helicopters stationed in Kuwait.
Mohebi stressed that the airport was never designated as a target during the operation.
Patriot Missile Blamed
Iranian officials instead blamed the incident on a malfunction involving American air defense systems. According to Mohebi, the damage at Kuwait International Airport resulted from a Patriot interceptor missile fired by US-made air defense systems.
He stated that the interceptor failed to successfully engage incoming Iranian projectiles and subsequently fell onto the airport’s passenger terminal.
“The damage to the airport resulted from one of the missiles of the American Patriot air defense system falling on the passenger building after it failed to intercept the Iranian missiles,” Mohebi said.
