Supreme Leader Succession

Iran’s interim leadership council met to discuss the process of selecting the country’s next Supreme Leader following the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during US-Israeli airstrikes, Iranian media reported on Friday.

The meeting was reportedly chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian and focused on steps to convene the Assembly of Experts, the clerical body responsible for appointing Iran’s Supreme Leader.

According to Tasnim News Agency, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani presented a report during the meeting on the latest developments in the war and the evolving regional situation.

The council also discussed strengthening Iran’s armed forces and ensuring that the government secures essential goods and medicines during the ongoing conflict, Tasnim reported.

Iran established the temporary leadership body immediately after the assassination of Khamenei in order to ensure continuity of governance.

ABC News reported that the interim leadership council includes President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and cleric Ayatollah Ali Reza Arafi, who collectively oversee the country until a new Supreme Leader is selected.

Meanwhile, China’s Xinhua News Agency, citing Iranian state media, reported that the council is expected to organize the process for convening the Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body responsible for appointing Iran’s next leader.

No timeline has yet been announced for when the Assembly will meet to vote.

Tehran Rejects Trump’s Remarks

The meeting also addressed comments made by US President Donald Trump, who recently suggested Washington should play a role in choosing Iran’s next leader.

According to Reuters news agency, Trump said the United States “must have a role in choosing Iran’s next leader” following the strikes that killed Khamenei.

Iranian officials strongly rejected the comments.

Iranian media reported that members of the leadership council said Trump’s statements reveal “the enemy’s hateful goals in this war,” stressing that Iran’s leadership will be determined by the Iranian people and institutions.

At the United Nations, Iran also reaffirmed its position regarding the ongoing war.

Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, told the Security Council that Tehran would continue exercising its right to self-defense until the attacks stop.

Iravani said Iran was acting under “the lawful right to self-defence” recognized in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

He also called on Security Council members to pressure the United States and Israel to halt their military operations against Iran.

The latest meeting of the interim leadership council is the third since the assassination of Khamenei, as Iranian authorities move to stabilize the country’s leadership while continuing military operations in the escalating regional war.
