The Israeli army has reportedly claimed to have thwarted weapon smuggling attempts via drones in recent weeks, without specifying the parties behind these alleged operations.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has declared the border area with Egypt a closed military zone, citing security concerns.
“I have I have instructed the IDF (Israeli Army – PC) to designate the area adjacent to the Israel-Egypt border as a closed military zone and to adjust the rules of engagement accordingly in order to combat the drone threat that endangers the state’s security,” Katz said in a statement on X on Thursday.

“In parallel, I have agreed with the head of the Shin Bet, David Zini, that the Shin Bet will act to define the threat of arms smuggling with drones as a terrorism threat,” he added.
He claimed that “Arms smuggling by means of drones is part of the war in Gaza and is intended to arm our enemies, and all measures must be taken to stop it.”
‘Declaring War’
“Today we are declaring war on those involved in the smuggling – and anyone who enters the prohibited area will be struck,” Katz stated.
According to Yedioth Ahronoth, cited by the Anadolu news agency, the defense minister ordered “to hit any unauthorized entity that infiltrates the forbidden area.”

The daily claimed that the decision came after what it called “massive weapons smuggling operations” along the border.
There was no immediate comment from Egyptian authorities on the Israeli claims, Anadolu reported.
