Israeli media reported that naval forces fired warning shots at an Egyptian warship after it entered waters off Gaza, an incident Cairo has not officially confirmed.

Israeli naval forces opened fire on an Egyptian military vessel after it entered waters off the coast of Gaza on Thursday evening, Israeli media reported on Friday.

Israel’s Channel 13 reported that the Egyptian warship had departed from the Sinai Peninsula and proceeded into an area subject to Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza.

According to the Israeli version, the Egyptian vessel was ordered to turn back, but when it continued moving toward Gaza, Israeli occupation forces fired warning shots in its direction. The ship later altered its course and returned to Egyptian territorial waters. No injuries were reported.

Israeli army sources told Channel 13 that Egyptian authorities later acknowledged responsibility for the incident and expressed regret. The report said contacts took place between Tel Aviv and Cairo following the episode in an effort to prevent escalation.

According to The New Arab, however, Egypt has not issued an official statement, and no confirmation has been published by major Egyptian media outlets.

The episode comes amid strained relations between Egypt and Israel since the start of the Gaza war in 2023. Cairo has repeatedly warned against any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza into Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and has played a central role as a mediator in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas.

Israel maintains effective control over Gaza’s maritime space and enforces a naval blockade across the entire coastal zone. Palestinian fishing access has been sharply curtailed for years, with Israeli forces repeatedly firing on fishing boats and killing scores of fishermen.
