Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence condemned Israel’s Gaza war as genocide and expressed concern over political dishonesty and censorship in the United States.

Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence has broken her silence on Israel’s war in Gaza, describing it as “no less than a genocide” and voicing concern about the state of free expression in the United States.

The Oscar winner made the comments during a press conference at the San Sebastián film festival, where she presented her new film Die, My Love.

According to Deadline magazine, moderators attempted to steer questions away from politics, but Lawrence responded to queries about the ongoing war and broader political issues.

“I’m terrified. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is no less than a genocide and it’s terrible,” she said when asked about Gaza.

The actress went on to lament the current political atmosphere in the US: “What makes me so sad is the disrespect in the discourse of American politics right now and how that is going to be normalized to the kids right now. It’s going to be normal to them that politicians lie.”

Lawrence also urged audiences to direct their anger toward those responsible, not toward artists, in reference to the heated debate within the entertainment industry.

More than 400 actors and filmmakers, including Mark Ruffalo, Emma Stone, and Joaquin Phoenix, have signed a cultural boycott pledge against Israeli film institutions accused of complicity in war crimes. In response, another open letter, backed by figures such as Liev Schreiber and Debra Messing, denounced that pledge as censorship.

Ongoing Genocide

Since reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, Israel has continued its bloody aerial bombardment across the Gaza Strip, killing and wounding thousands of Palestinians.

Starting on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military, with American support, launched a genocidal war against the people of Gaza. This campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 65,500 Palestinians, with more than 167,000 wounded. The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.

In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade has caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians—mostly children—with hundreds of thousands more at risk.

Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. The nation is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.

  1. Now? Only now, it’s a genocide? It’s never NOT been one. Where were all these suddenly interested celebrities over the past 23 months? Most likely, rooting for the Israeli Jewish Nazis because they believed the fake news that Hamas is the bad guy.
It’s the Jews killing babies, not the Arabs. The Jews are shooting children in the head, not the Arabs. The Jews are committing genocide, not the Arabs.
The majority of Israelis are not Semites. The majority of Arabs, are.
