With Mushta Tower destroyed, entire neighborhoods face forced evacuation under Israel’s campaign of mass displacement.

The Israeli military on Friday struck Mushta Tower, a residential building in western Gaza City that houses hundreds of displaced Palestinians. The attack targeted multiple floors of the tower, causing extensive destruction, as plumes of smoke rose over the densely populated area.

Palestinian sources cited by Anadolu noted that Israel has bombed Mushta Tower four times since the start of its genocidal campaign on October 7, 2023, destroying numerous apartments.

Adjacent to the site is the Kteiba Camp, one of Gaza City’s largest displacement centers, home to tens of thousands of Palestinians. Nearby, the Al-Azhar and Islamic University campuses also shelter thousands of tents, where tens of thousands of displaced people have sought refuge.

Altogether, the western Gaza area now shelters roughly 1 million displaced Palestinians, mostly from the east and north of Gaza.

The management of Mushta Tower rejected Israel’s justifications as fabrications. In a statement, it confirmed: “The building is free of any military or security installations and serves solely as shelter for displaced Palestinians. All floors were open and exposed, containing no light or heavy weapons.”

Residents expressed devastation and anger at the relentless targeting of civilian shelters.

Israel’s campaign of destruction has increasingly targeted residential high-rises, even as they serve as shelters for civilians forced from their homes. Leaflets dropped over parts of Gaza City ordered residents to evacuate, part of a strategy to empty entire neighborhoods and force further displacement.

The ongoing genocide in Gaza entered its 700th day on Friday, with more than 64,000 Palestinians killed. The devastation has left the enclave facing famine and the collapse of all basic services.

More than 10,400 Palestinians remain imprisoned in Israel, where they suffer torture, starvation, and medical neglect that has led to numerous deaths, according to human rights organizations.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
