Madrid bans US military aircraft linked to the Iran war from its airspace, deepening tensions with Washington and complicating US operations.
Key Developments
- Spain bans US war-related flights from its airspace and bases.
- Officials describe the war as “illegal” and refuse any involvement.
- Decision forces US aircraft to reroute, straining military logistics.
Spain Expands Ban on US Military Operations
Spain has banned US military aircraft involved in the war on Iran from using its airspace and bases, significantly expanding earlier restrictions that had applied only to specific installations.
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said Madrid would block any US flights linked to the conflict, stressing that “Spain should not do anything that could escalate” the war, and that the decision reflects the “majority sentiment” of Spaniards.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed that the policy was clear and consistent: “We don’t authorize either the use of military bases or the use of airspace for actions related to the war in Iran.”
The move builds on previous restrictions on US access to key facilities, including the Rota naval base and Morón air base, both central to US military operations in Europe and the Mediterranean.
Spanish officials emphasized that the decision was not sudden. Robles stated that “this was made perfectly clear to the US armed forces from the beginning,” describing the war as “profoundly illegal and unjust.”
Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo also rejected any involvement, calling the conflict “a unilateral war that violates international law,” and confirming that Spain would neither participate in nor support it.
Decision Complicates US Logistics
The airspace closure forces US military aircraft to bypass Spain, disrupting key transit routes between the United States and the Middle East.
Spanish media reported that the restriction applies nationwide, with limited exceptions for emergency situations.
The decision comes amid growing tensions between Madrid and Washington. US President Donald Trump had earlier threatened economic retaliation, saying Spain had been “terrible” and warning that the US could “cut off all trade” with the country.
He also suggested the US could ignore Spanish restrictions, stating: “We could use their base if we want… nobody’s going to tell us not to use it.”
Despite these threats, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has maintained a firm stance, warning that the war risks “playing Russian roulette” with millions of lives, and insisting that Spain “will not be complicit in something that is bad for the world.”
The decision marks one of the most significant European breaks with US military operations in the region, signaling both logistical challenges for Washington and a widening political divide over the war on Iran.

this is not the American Way. it is the way of the cabal that really runs America.
fight back. resist, refuse to abide by their rules and threats.
Spain, the only European nation worth its salt. Spain is to be respected for its honourable stance. The remainder – spineless, and devoid of anything resembling integrity.
