Since October 2023, over 18,000 Palestinians have been detained across the occupied West Bank, including hundreds of children and women.

A Palestinian detainee has succumbed to injuries sustained when Israeli forces shot him during a raid in the southern occupied West Bank last week.

The Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority confirmed the death of 20-year-old Musab Abdul-Munim al-Eida on Tuesday, Al Mayadeen reported. He was critically wounded when Israeli troops stormed the Tel Rumeida neighborhood of al-Khalil on August 21 and opened live fire.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, al-Eida was transferred to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, where he succumbed to his wounds on Monday.

Despite his critical condition, his detention at Ofer Prison had been extended just a day earlier, the report added.

Extrajudicial Killings

The PPS and Detainee Affairs Commission denounced his death as “a field execution resulting from direct shooting and deliberate medical negligence.”

This was part of what they described as a wider pattern of extrajudicial killings carried out by Israeli forces, the report added, noting that other Palestinian advocacy groups emphasized that his death highlights the systematic abuse endured by detainees in Israel’s prisons.

Palestinian detainees are routinely subjected to torture, starvation, medical neglect, and degrading treatment from the moment of detention, according to numerous reports by rights groups including B’Tselem, as well as the UN.

Prisoners’ Conditions

Following a visit from its lawyers, the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs revealed in a report on Tuesday the critical medical health condition of two prisoners held in Israel’s Megiddo prison, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

Adam Abu al-Hassan, 21, from Beit Ur al-Tahta, Ramallah, who suffers from leukemia and takes daily medication, had suffered from severe diarrhea for a full year, the report stated. This has led to a severe vitamin deficiency, resulting in a weight loss of approximately 25 kilograms. Abu al-Hassan has been detained since May 20, 2024.

At the same time, Habib Allah Sabatin, 17 , from Husan, Bethlehem, who is under administrative detention, suffers from sinusitis and is in dire need of a special inhaler. He also suffered from sciatica, from which he recovered, but the disease recurred and he requires treatment, the report noted. Sabatin also suffers from toothaches due to a broken brace.

Over 18,000 Detained

Since October 2023, over 18,000 Palestinians have been detained across the occupied West Bank, including hundreds of children and women.

Al-Eida’s death comes against a backdrop of intensifying Israeli military and settler violence in the West Bank, Al Mayadeen reported.

Data compiled by Palestinian health authorities and the United Nations show that since October 7, 2023, at least 1,013 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, including 160 children, the report stated.

Illegal settlers, often backed by Israeli forces, have carried out shootings, arson attacks on homes and farmland, and the poisoning of water sources. In many cases, these attacks aim to displace Palestinian communities and expand illegal settlements, the report added.
