A letter signed by nearly 100 reserve soldiers and officers expressed concern over harm caused to civilians during military operations.

Around 100 Israeli reserve soldiers and officers, including signatories up to the rank of lieutenant colonel, have sent a letter to Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir warning of what they described as a “decline in the values of the Israeli army” during the ongoing war, Israeli media reported.

According to reports published by KAN News, the reservists stated that incidents observed in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon reflect a deterioration in the army’s commitment to its declared ethical principles, including the doctrine known as “purity of arms.”

The letter expressed concern over harm caused to civilians during military operations.

“In the course of the fighting, there have been, and at times continue to be, cases that do not reflect the spirit and values of the Israeli army — values on which we were raised and which we have taught those serving under us,” the letter reportedly said.

The signatories called on the Chief of Staff to reinforce disciplinary and ethical standards and ensure clear enforcement of the army’s legal and operational guidelines.

They argued that “collapse of values” also affects operational performance, stating that the army’s effectiveness is damaged when discipline and ethical norms are weakened.

No formal response from the army had been issued at the time of publication.

Starting on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military, with American support, launched a genocidal war against the people of Gaza. This campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of over 68,800 Palestinians, with more than 170,000 wounded.

The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.

In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade has caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians, mostly children, with hundreds of thousands more at risk.

Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. Israel is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.

  1. 2 years of genocide and 200 reservists “…send a letter, warning..”. Not even protesting. But they are still warcriminals, and should be jugded accordingly, just like all the others. Let them talk about their so-called values, by all means. In their prisoncells.

  2. while I appreciate the action, there is no possible way to carry out the IDF’s mission to ‘establish a jewish state’ of apartheid and ethnic cleansing in ANY moral way… this has been clear to the world for decades, and the current level of genocide is mask-off for both the IDF and the US. There should NOT be soldiers willing to serve either.
