Reuters quoted a senior US official as saying that Blinken told the Palestinian leader during the meeting that the PA should play a central role in Gaza’s future.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday expressed his readiness to help manage the Gaza Strip after the removal of the Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas by Israel, Reuters quoted a US official as saying.

The comments were reportedly made during a meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Sunday, the second of its kind since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza.

Reuters quoted a senior US official as saying that Blinken told the Palestinian leader during the meeting that the PA should play a central role in Gaza’s future.

“The future of Gaza was not the focus of the meeting, but the Palestinian Authority seemed ready to play a role,” the US official said, noting that Blinken thanked Abbas for helping him maintain calm in the West Bank.

Blinken suggested that the most logical solution in the Strip would be for a “revitalized Palestinian Authority” to eventually run it, but acknowledged that other states and international agencies are likely to play a role in security and governance in the meantime.

Another news agency, AFP, quoted sources as saying that Abbas had linked the return of the PA to the Gaza Strip to a “comprehensive political solution”.

Abbas said during the meeting, which lasted about an hour, that “security and peace are achieved by ending the Israeli occupation of the land of the state of Palestine, with its capital, East Jerusalem, on the 1967 borders.”

“The Gaza Strip is an integral part of the State of Palestine, and we will fully assume our responsibilities within the framework of a comprehensive political solution that includes all of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip,” he said.

For its part, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA claimed that Abbas “demanded an immediate end to the devastating war and the speedy provision of humanitarian aid, including medical supplies, food, water, electricity and fuel, to the Gaza Strip.”

Death Toll Rises

Israel has, thus far, killed over 9,770 Palestinians in Gaza, including 4,800 children, and wounded more 25,000. Palestinian Ministry of Health reports and international organizations say that the majority of those killed and wounded are women and children.

Despite a massive Israeli military buildup around the Gaza borders and sporadic infiltrations on the outskirts of the besieged Strip, Palestinian Resistance continues to repel Israeli attacks.

To justify its military failure, the Israeli army continues to pound civilian homes throughout the Gaza Strip with new massacres reported everywhere in the besieged enclave.

Gaza has been under a tight Israeli military siege since 2007, following a democratic election in occupied Palestine, the results of which were rejected by Tel Aviv and Washington.

  3. That would indeed be a great solution, president of Gaza: Mahmoud Abbas, today unelected president of the PA, quisling for Israel and the US. Everybody happy. Oh wait…and the Palestinians in Gaza, what about them? Do they care?
