TLP leader, Saad Rizvi, reportedly told a press briefing on Sunday that the protest was  “against Israel’s atrocities.”

At least five people, including a police officer, were killed when Pakistani police clashed with thousands of demonstrators during a pro-Palestine march on Monday.

The clashes followed the announcement by the police of the start of an operation to target the Tehrik-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) movement, after negotiations to cancel a march in solidarity with the Palestinian cause failed, according to reports.

The march from the eastern metropolis of Lahore to capital city of Islamabad, a nearly 400 km (248 miles) walk, began on Friday, Reuters reported. Police reportedly tried to slow the movement of the protest, leading to several clashes.

According to an Al Jazeera Arabic report, the police chief of the Punjab region, Osman Anwar, claimed that the demonstrators fired at the authorities, which resulted in the death of the policeman and the injury of others.

Anwar did not confirm that there were any casualties among the protesters, but the party said in a statement that many of its supporters were killed or injured, the report stated.

The movement began its protests in Lahore last week and announced its intention to march towards the American embassy in Islamabad, prompting the authorities to cut off the roads between the two cities and block the internet.

Vehicles on Fire

Video clips published by the organization showed a number of vehicles on fire, including a truck carrying party officials who were leading what they called “The Long March”, the report noted.

Al Jazeera Arabic reported that after the failure of the negotiations between the movement and the government yesterday on Sunday, the authorities in the town of Moridaki, north of Lahore, began an “operation to disperse” more than seven thousand protesters who reached it on their march towards the capital.

The police said that members of the TLP movement deliberately “pelted stones and used batons equipped with nails and firebombs…and fired randomly, causing injuries to civilians and law enforcement officers,” the report stated.

According to Reuters, the movement’s leader, Saad Rizbi, was also injured when police opened fire on protesters.

Rizvi reportedly told a press briefing on Sunday that the protesters wanted to march to Islamabad in support of the Palestinian people, saying “Our march is against Israel’s atrocities.”

US Mission Statement

The US Mission in Pakistan said in a statement on its website that the “U.S. Embassy Islamabad and the U.S. Consulates General in Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar are monitoring ongoing protest activity across Pakistan.”

It stated that large crowds and traffic congestion are expected, along with a precautionary security presence, an increased number of checkpoints, and associated disruptions to local mobile and internet networks in the region.

The US Mission advised American citizens to avoid large gatherings and remain aware of their surroundings, noting “Protests can be fluid in nature and even peaceful ones can turn violent.”

Israel’s Genocidal War

This campaign resulted in the deaths of more than 67,000 Palestinians, with more than 169,000 wounded. The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.

In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians—mostly children—with hundreds of thousands more at risk.

Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. The nation is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.

The first phase of US President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire agreement took effect on Friday aimed at ending the two-year Israeli offensive on the enclave.
