BRICS Calls for Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanon
Foreign ministers from BRICS member states called on Friday for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory and stressed the need to fully respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The position was outlined in a statement published by India’s Ministry of External Affairs following a BRICS foreign ministers meeting held in New Delhi under India’s chairmanship.
The ministers called on Israel to withdraw forces from all Lebanese territory, including positions in southern Lebanon where troops reportedly remain deployed.
The statement referred to the existing ceasefire agreement in Lebanon and urged all parties to fully adhere to its terms.
BRICS ministers also condemned continued ceasefire violations, warning that such actions undermine regional stability and diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving peace.
The statement did not identify specific incidents but stressed that violations risk worsening tensions in southern Lebanon.
Support for UNIFIL Mission
BRICS members also highlighted the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in maintaining security and stability along the Lebanese border.
The ministers stressed the need to guarantee the safety, security and freedom of movement of UN personnel and equipment.
They also emphasized respect for the inviolability of UN facilities.
The statement condemned attacks targeting UNIFIL personnel and installations, describing them as violations of international law and of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The ministers reaffirmed the importance of protecting UN peacekeeping missions and allowing them to carry out operations without obstruction.
Meeting Held amid Regional Tensions
The statement followed a two-day BRICS foreign ministers summit held in New Delhi ahead of the 18th BRICS leaders summit scheduled to take place in India later this year.
The meeting took place amid growing regional tensions linked to the US-Israeli war on Iran and broader instability affecting energy and diplomatic issues across the region.
The gathering was chaired by Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar at the Bharat Mandapam Convention Center.
Representatives from the eleven BRICS member states participated, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
