Services in many hospital departments have reportedly been suspended, including all scheduled surgeries.

Electricity has been cut off at Al-Awda Hospital in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in the central Gaza Strip due to a fuel shortage, leading to a near standstill of healthcare services, the Anadolu news agency reported on Friday.

The fuel needed to operate backup generators has nearly run out as Israel continues its blockade of Gaza despite its ceasefire agreement with the Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas, according to the hospital.

As a result, services in many hospital departments have been suspended.

The Al-Awda Health and Community Association, which operates the hospital, was forced to suspend all scheduled surgeries across all departments.

The association decided to continue medical services only in the emergency department and maternity ward in order to maintain vital services at a minimum level, the report stated.

Serious Consequences

The situation could have serious consequences, particularly for patients in need of emergency surgical intervention and specialized medical care.

In a statement, the hospital announced that its current fuel reserves had dropped to critical levels and that it may be forced to halt health care services in the region altogether.

Severe Shortages

According to the Quds News Network (QNN), the head of the Government Media Office in Gaza, Ismail Al-Thawabta, has warned of the near collapse of the health system due to continued restrictions on the entry of medical equipment and essential medicines.

Al-Thawabta said supplies reaching Gaza lack specialized surgical tools and chronic disease medications, with severe shortages in surgical instruments, orthopedic equipment, and anesthesia drugs, the report quoted him as saying.

He added that the crisis has forced the full or partial suspension of surgeries in several hospitals, leaving around 500,000 procedures postponed. In addition, “medical supplies entering Gaza meet no more than 10% of actual needs, as vital equipment continues to be blocked under flimsy security pretexts,” the report stated.

Close to 71,000 Killed

Starting on October 7, 2023, the Israeli military, with American support, launched a genocidal war against the people of Gaza. This campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of close to 71,000 Palestinians, with more than 170,000 wounded. The vast majority of the population has been displaced, and the destruction of infrastructure is unprecedented since World War II. Thousands of people are still missing.

In addition to the military assault, the Israeli blockade has caused a man-made famine, leading to the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians—mostly children—with hundreds of thousands more at risk.

Israeli Defense Minister Vows to ‘Never Leave’ Gaza, Contradicting Ceasefire Deal

A ceasefire, which came into effect on October 10, has been violated by Israel more than 800 times, according to the Gaza media office, resulting in the death of over 400 Palestinians and injury of more than 1,100 others.

Despite widespread international condemnation, little has been done to hold Israel accountable. The nation is currently under investigation for genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, are officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.
