Fans of Israel’s Maccabi Haifa soccer club have ignited a wave of outrage in Poland after displaying a large banner that read “Murderers since 1939” during a match against Poland’s Raków Częstochowa.
The incident took place during the second leg of the third qualifying round for the Europa Conference League.
The banner was widely seen as a direct insult to the memory of the millions of Poles killed in World War II.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday evening in Debrecen, Hungary—where the match was moved for security reasons—quickly drew angry reactions from the highest political levels in Poland.
President Karol Nawrocki described the banner as “shameful,” adding on the X platform, “It’s an insult to the memory of the Polish victims of WWII, including 3 million Jews… Stupidity that cannot be justified by any words.”
Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński called the incident a “shameful distortion of history” and demanded a “strong condemnation” of what he called “anti-Poland sentiment” by Israeli hooligans.

The controversy reflects deep historical wounds between the two countries. Polish-Israeli relations have long been strained by tensions related to the Holocaust and subsequent accusations that some Poles were complicit in the killing of Jews during the German occupation—accusations that many Poles reject as an attempt to tarnish the image of a nation that also suffered the horrors of war.
