The Islamic Jihad movement declared, on Saturday, that it has reached an agreement to ease violence between the besieged Gaza Strip and Israel, as a result of Egyptian mediation efforts.

Daoud Shehab, a spokesperson for Islamic Jihad, said that understandings had been reached for a ceasefire with Israel with the help of Egyptian intervention.

Shehab said:

“After contacts between the Islamic Jihad leadership and the brothers in Egypt it was agreed that a comprehensive ceasefire will begin immediately.”

He added,

“The Islamic Jihad will abide by the ceasefire if the occupation (Israel) does the same.”

In addition, following the escalation in Gaza, Israeli Defense Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, met with Israeli army senior officials in Tel Aviv to assess the situation.

Earlier on Saturday, Israeli warplanes carried out 91 airstrikes across Gaza.

It is noteworthy that the destruction from three Israeli offensives since 2008, including damage to the enclave’s water, sanitation, energy, and medical facilities, coupled with slow reconstruction due to the blockade, led the UN to warn that Gaza could be “uninhabitable” by 2020.
