Participants plan to cross from Libya into Egypt by Thursday before reaching the city of Rafah near the border with Gaza.

An overland aid convoy of buses and cars crossed into Libya on Tuesday as it makes its way to Egypt, aiming to break Israel’s crippling humanitarian siege on the Gaza Strip.

Consisting of 12 buses and 100 private cars, the Sumoud (resilience in Arabic) convoy of more than 1,000 participants, led by Tunisian civil society as well as participants from Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, and Libya, set off from the Tunisian capital on Monday.

“We crossed through several Libyan cities and are now close to Al-Zawiya, 51 km west of Tripoli,” Mohammed Ameen Binnour, a medical coordinator of the convoy, told the Anadolu news agency.

Binnour said the aid convoy was greeted by Libyans on the streets and given a formal salute by Libyan security forces.

The Libyans “also provided the convoy with all kinds of aid, including food, cold water, and other items,” he added.

Varied Support

Participants, reportedly including diplomats, lawyers, medical professionals, and activists, plan to cross from Libya into Egypt by Thursday before reaching the city of Rafah near the border with Gaza.

Bennour earlier told Anadolu that the convoy “is part of a global initiative involving more than 30 countries from Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia.”

“We are moving in coordination with various organizations aiming to reach Gaza by land, sea, and air,” he added, stressing their goal is to reach Gaza by land and to raise global awareness of what is happening there through events they hold along the way.

“We are coordinating with initiatives” such as the March on Gaza and the Global March on Gaza, he said.

According to the Tunisian Carthage Magazine, organizers state that the convoy is “a direct response to the blockade at sea, an attempt to exert pressure on Egypt to facilitate aid and allow the passage of those in need.”

“Cairo has yet to grant passage permits, making entry into Gaza contingent on Egypt’s stance,” the magazine reported.

Global March to Gaza

In a related initiative, thousands of activists from 32 countries are planning a demonstration at the Rafah border crossing on June 15, Anadolu reported.

Activists will gather in Cairo, Egypt, on June 12 to travel to the border town of Arish the next day, and then march 50 kilometers (31 miles) over three days to reach Rafah.

Freedom Flotilla Intercepted

In the early hours of Monday, Israel intercepted a British-flagged aid ship bound for Gaza with humanitarian aid. Twelve activists, including journalists, on board the Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FCC), were detained by the Israeli naval forces.

On Tuesday, the FCC confirmed that four of the 12 activists have been deported and eight remain in Israeli detention.

As Israel has continued its closure of Gaza’s border crossings to humanitarian aid since early March, aid agencies as well as the United Nations have warned about the risk of famine among Gaza’s 2.4 million population.

Ongoing Genocide

Since Israel’s reneging on the ceasefire on March 18, it has killed and wounded thousands of Palestinians throughout the Gaza Strip through a bloody and ongoing aerial bombardment.

On October 7, 2023, following a Palestinian Resistance operation in southern Israel, the Israeli military launched a genocidal war against the Palestinians, killing over 54,800, wounding more than 126,000, with over 14,000 still missing.

Despite habitual condemnation by many countries around the world of the Israeli genocide, little has been done to hold Israel accountable.

Israel is currently under investigation for the crime of genocide by the International Court of Justice, while accused war criminals — including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — are now officially wanted by the International Criminal Court.

The Israeli genocide has been largely defended, supported, and financed by Washington and a few other Western powers.

  1. Nazinyahu and Katz will call them antisemites. Gvir will call for all the settlers to harass them. Smotrich will threaten to leave the government if they don’t turn around and abandon their journey. Trump will say ” Israel ” has the right to defend themselves…(against children sleeping in tents) and send the marines to control the ” pro-Hamas ” protesters…
