Iran’s Nuclear Shield: Why Deterrence Has Become a Matter of Life or Death

PALESTINE CHRONICLE: ***While American foreign policy relies on aggressive military posturing, economic strangulation, and unconditional alignment with Israel, the structural incentives for Iran to surrender its nuclear potential will remain non-existent.***

In international relations, security is not an absolute. It is a relative calculation.

For the Islamic Republic of Iran, a nuclear deterrence posture is a reasonable, if not necessary, response to decades of jingoism and the ongoing war instigated by Israel and the United States.

On Sunday, August 9, 2026, during commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Nagasaki, the city’s current mayor called nuclear weapons an “absolute evil” that can never coexist with humanity.

That has been the position of Iran’s leadership since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (1979-1989) refused to authorize the use of chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War, citing Islamic principles, and when his successor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (1989-2026), officially voiced a religious prohibition (haram) against nuclear weapons in 2003.

The relentless, unprovoked US-Israel air wars, culminating in the devastating February 28, 2026, missile strikes that assassinated the Supreme Leader and his family, as well as dozens of senior military and security officials, have shattered any remaining illusions of diplomatic restraint. Every air strike, targeted assassination, and expansion of the war has intensified a growing consensus across Iran that the ultimate guarantor of national survival is nuclear deterrence.

The Search for a Decolonial Way Out: The Electoral Impasse Between the River and the Sea

PALESTINE CHRONICLE: ***The strategic question is whether Palestinians can enter these different electoral arenas without losing sight of the larger struggle: the struggle to dismantle the structures of colonial domination.***

It is difficult, and even unacceptable, for a Palestinian to view the elections to be held separately in Israel and the 67-occupied territories in the coming months outside the context of the monstrous Zionist regime, especially following its ongoing genocidal crime.

These elections carry deep paradoxes, contradictions, and existential questions: how can Palestinians reconcile their understanding of the genocidal regime and the constraints it imposes on the electoral process with their immediate need for protection from an unprecedented level of barbarism being perpetrated—not as a reaction, but as a strategy to eliminate Palestinians politically and physically?

The approach of boycotting the elections, and potentially deepening Israel’s international illegitimacy, may have been valid and legitimate years ago. Today, however, it could seem to many Palestinians like a luxury—and even counterproductive. Participation in elections is driven by the fact that avenues for political mobilization have drastically shrunk, as the Israeli regime increasingly applies many of the repressive tactics routinely used against Palestinians in the West Bank to Palestinians inside Israel who hold Israeli citizenship since 1948.

Burning America’s Cards One by One: What is Iran’s Strategy? – Analysis

PALESTINE CHRONICLE: ***Iran is systematically targeting US regional assets and alliances, tightening pressure as Washington confronts mounting military, logistical and political strains.***

While the US Trump administration insists that the very much closed Strait of Hormuz is in fact open and grapples with domestic pushback against his war losses, Iran has been busy pursuing a military strategy that is placing a chokehold on their opposition.

Although the ongoing regional war has been experiencing a lull in direct confrontations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the US-Israeli alliance, a series of other fronts have become the focus of Tehran’s recent efforts.

Contrary to what you would be led to believe by the corporate media, Iran’s ballistic missile and drone fire has not ceased. Instead, officials belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have made it clear that there is no ceasefire in effect and that their operations are therefore being carried out in a coordinated fashion.

Anas Al-Sharif One Year Later: The Systematic Killing of Palestine’s Journalists

PALESTINE CHRONICLE: ***Journalists are killed in their homes with their families, in marked press cars, while live-streaming from hospital courtyards, while sheltering in media offices that Israeli officials had been informed were civilian.***

One year ago this week, the Israeli military killed Anas Al-Sharif. He was a young Palestinian journalist working in Gaza, one of the many who continued to report under bombardment, displacement, and the constant knowledge that the camera itself had become a target. His death was not an accident of war. It was one act in the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza — a genocide that has included, as a deliberate and central component, the systematic elimination of those who document it.

Al-Sharif’s killing joins a list that has grown so long it has become a statistic rather than a series of individual lives. Since October 2023, close to three hundred Palestinian and now Lebanese journalists and media workers have been killed by Israeli forces. The Committee to Protect Journalists documents at least 209 killed by Israel in Gaza and in Israeli detention centers. Palestinian press associations and the International Federation of Journalists put the figure higher, in the mid-to-high 260s. These were not combatants. They were reporters, camera operators, producers, and fixers — many of them wearing clearly marked press vests, working for local outlets or international networks, trying to show the world what was happening to their cities, their schools, their mosques, their hospitals, and their families as the genocide unfolded.

This is not merely the deadliest conflict for journalists in the modern era. According to analyses from Brown University’s Costs of War project, more journalists have been killed in Gaza than in the US Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War (including Cambodia and Laos), the wars in the former Yugoslavia, and the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan — combined. The comparison is not rhetorical flourish. It is a measure of the scale of a genocidal campaign that has treated the press as an enemy to be erased. What took place across the major industrial wars of the twentieth century, across continents and decades, has been surpassed in a single strip of land in less than three years. That fact alone should end any pretense that these deaths are the ordinary hazards of covering combat.

Israel’s Greatest Fear is FPV Drones in the Hands of West Bank Fighters

***If the West Bank resistance gets their hands on FPV drones, this means small teams can run covert operations that target settlements and checkpoints.***

Israeli army-backed settler militia assaults across the occupied West Bank are driving renewed speculation that the unbearable violence could lead to a significant escalation. Although there has clearly been an effort by the Israeli authorities to drum up violence, they also understand that there is a major risk involved in continuing on this trajectory.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has ordered his military to draw up plans to officially hand over control of Israeli illegal West Bank settlers to the police. This would make hardline Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir responsible for managing security matters in the occupied territory, a man who just last month advocated for turning West Bank cities into Gaza.

Previously, the majority of Israel’s efforts at ethnically cleansing the territory were focused on what is known as Area C, constituting roughly 60% of the occupied West Bank. Area C is under full Israeli military occupation and is home to over 500,000 illegal settlers, whose “security” is provided by the Army. Around 300,000 Palestinians also live in this zone, created by the controversial Oslo Accords signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in the early to mid-1990s. The total Palestinian population of the West Bank is currently around 3.5 million.

This system has been in place for decades now, during which the Palestinian Authority (PA) was supposed to have security and civil control in Area A (18% of the land) and civil control in Area B (22% of the land). What this enabled over time was for Israel to create a system, working hand in glove with their PA allies, to divide the occupied territory into dozens of isolated enclaves that were separated from one another.

The Gaza Peace Trump Announced, and the Rejection Netanyahu Delivered

PALESTINE CHRONICLE:

Donald Trump took to social media Thursday, July 30, to announce what he called a breakthrough: a phased agreement under the Board of Peace requiring the Palestinian Resistance to disarm and Israel to withdraw. The optics were of a president closing out a genocide he and his predecessor enabled for two years.

The Palestinian Resistance agreed to the plan. Israel rejected it.

Imagine if the Resistance had rejected the fifteen points by reasonably conditioning disarmament on an end to Israeli occupation. We don’t have to imagine Trump’s reaction. He’d have condemned them by nightfall and held them responsible for killing the peace plan.

Israel gets a different standard. On Sunday, August 9, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his cabinet: “I want to clarify this: Israel rejects the 15-point document.”

Rather than call out Israel for sabotaging his own plan, Trump waved away Netanyahu’s rejection as mere election posturing, as if that was acceptable. Trump’s dismissal didn’t go unnoticed. Three days later, Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, doubled down, declaring that Israel will not withdraw, not from Gaza, not from Lebanon and not from Syri

They Keep Lying to You: The War on Yemen and Why You Hear Nothing about It

PALESTINE CHRONICLE:

A UN-brokered ceasefire that had been in place since 2022 was declared over last month. The deterioration of that ceasefire between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Ansarallah-led government has major implications not only for the region but for the global economy. However, there is such a lack of honest reporting on the issue that even US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth doesn’t know what’s actually going on.

For 11 years, the global media has failed the people of Yemen, enabling Western and Arab powers’ complicity to go unchecked. Millions of Yemeni civilians have faced starvation, disease and indiscriminate bombing campaigns, all as Saudi Arabia’s narrative about the war it launched has been peddled by the International Community.

In July, the war that began in 2015 – when the Saudi-led coalition intervened in the country – reopened, this time with an announcement from the Yemeni Armed Forces loyal to the Sana’a government announcing a counter-blockade on Saudi Arabia, later following this up with both retaliatory strikes on Saudi targets and what they called pre-emptive strikes against Saudi-proxy forces inside Yemen itself.

Who is Daniel Perez? Ramaphosa Meeting IDF Soldier’s Family Raises Crucial Questions

PALESTINE CHRONICLE: The question doing the rounds is whether meeting the family of a South African citizen serving as an Israeli soldier, as President Ramaphosa did, has undermined South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

Equally concerning is whether the meeting will now be interpreted by South African mercenaries operating and deployed within the settler colonial regime’s military as kosher and “permissible” despite legislation that prohibits it.

Though the official version is that the Perez family had prompted a meeting to thank Ramaphosa for facilitating the release and return of Daniel Perez’s remains, it is silent on who the slain soldier was.

From open-source information, we learn Daniel Perez was a South African-born tank commander and soldier who, in battle with Palestine’s liberation movement Hamas during its October 7, 2023, attempt to break free of Israel’s illegal siege, was killed and taken hostage.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and raised in Glenhazel before his family moved to Israel in 2014.

Standing Up to Netanyahu: Five Concrete Fronts to Counter Israel’s Genocide in Gaza

PALESTINE CHRONICLE: It is now official: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has flatly rejected the core conditions of the Board of Peace framework, explicitly stating that Israel will neither adhere to a ceasefire nor withdraw its forces from Gaza.

During a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu stated with unambiguous language: “Israel rejects the 15-point document published by the Board of Peace for Gaza”.

In a previous conversation with lead envoy Nickolay Mladenov, Netanyahu set conditions—such as demanding unilateral operational freedom for the Israeli military to strike inside Gaza at will—that render a genuine peace agreement structurally impossible.

The Israeli army leadership, under Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, reinforced this posture by outlining three uncompromising “red lines” to the political establishment: complete operational freedom to eliminate perceived threats anywhere in the Strip, strict control over all weapons entering or exiting Gaza, and zero military withdrawal unless Hamas is completely disarmed.

Paper Tiger: The Failure of America’s Trillion Dollar War Machine

PALESTINE CHRONICLE: According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the United States spent $21 trillion on its military between 2001 and 2024 (in constant 2024 dollars), equal to the combined military spending of the next eighteen countries. Iran barely made that list at all, spending only 2% of what the US did, and SIPRI estimated Iran’s 2025 military budget at only $7.5 billion. So how is Iran holding its own against the multi-trillion-dollar US war machine?

A critical difference between the US war on Iran and previous US and allied bombing campaigns against Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and now Gaza, is that the US and Israel have failed to destroy Iran’s air defense system and cannot fly warplanes over Iran without risking the loss of planes and pilots to enemy fire. Iran has wisely built its critical defense infrastructure underground, with arms factories, weapons stockpiles and launch sites sheltered safely beneath its impenetrable mountainous terrain.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth claimed on March 10th that the US had “total air dominance” over Iran, but that is still not true. Instead, US forces are mainly attacking Iran with stand-off weapons from outside Iran’s borders, radically depleting US stockpiles of extraordinarily expensive weapons.
