- The incident adds to a pattern of Israeli ceasefire violations and obstruction of peacekeeping operations.
Israeli Drone Incident Near Kfarkela
Israeli occupation forces violated international law on Tuesday after one of their military drones threatened United Nations peacekeepers during a routine patrol in southern Lebanon, according to a statement issued by United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
UNIFIL said its soldiers detected two Israeli drones flying “in a hostile manner” over their patrol near the town of Kfarkela, close to the Blue Line separating Lebanon from the occupied Palestinian territory.
One of the drones was reported to be carrying an unidentified object and entered an area that posed a direct and immediate threat to the safety of peacekeeping forces.
In response, UN soldiers carried out what the mission described as a “defensive action,” in line with established procedures designed to protect personnel under imminent risk.
Sound Bomb Dropped Near Peacekeepers
According to UNIFIL, the Israeli drone dropped a sound bomb that detonated approximately 50 meters from the peacekeepers’ position before retreating back toward Israeli-controlled territory. No injuries were reported, and the patrol continued its mission following the incident.
UNIFIL confirmed that both the Lebanese army and the Israeli military had been informed in advance of the patrol activity, as is standard practice for sensitive areas along the Blue Line.
“The use of an armed drone in this manner is unacceptable,” the mission said, stressing that the aircraft belonged to the Israeli military and had crossed the Blue Line in clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Violation of International Law and Mandate
UNIFIL emphasized that the incident constituted a breach of international law and directly undermined the mandate assigned to peacekeeping forces by the UN Security Council. The mission reiterated that Israel is obligated to respect the Blue Line and ensure the safety and freedom of movement of UN personnel.
“This behavior obstructs the work of peacekeepers and endangers efforts to restore stability along the Blue Line,” UNIFIL said, warning that such actions risk further escalation in an already fragile environment.
The Blue Line was established in 2000 to verify Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon and remains a central reference point for monitoring violations.

Pattern of Escalation in Southern Lebanon
The drone incident follows a warning issued by UNIFIL a day earlier regarding Israeli aerial activity in southern Lebanon, during which the mission said Israeli forces dropped a chemical substance that disrupted peacekeeping operations and raised environmental and health concerns.
Israel has continued to violate the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah that has been in place since late November 2024, according to Lebanese officials and UN statements. These violations include airspace incursions, artillery fire, targeted strikes, and continued occupation of at least five strategic Lebanese hilltops seized during the most recent war.
Wider Context of Israeli Attacks on Lebanon
Israel’s assault on Lebanon, which began in October 2023 and escalated into a full-scale war in September 2024, killed more than 4,000 people and injured nearly 17,000 others before a ceasefire was reached. Despite the truce, Tel Aviv has maintained military pressure through repeated violations, undermining prospects for long-term stability.
UNIFIL has repeatedly warned that continued Israeli actions against peacekeepers not only violate international agreements but also threaten to unravel the already tenuous calm along the Lebanese-Israeli frontier.
The mission renewed its call on Israel to cease violations, respect international law, and allow peacekeeping forces to carry out their duties without intimidation or interference.
