Israel to Extradite Citizen over Srebrenica

An Israeli citizen accused of taking part in one of the worst massacres in Bosnia in the 1992 to 1995 war is to be extradited to the former Yugoslav republic, a court in Jerusalem has ruled.

The district court’s ruling on Monday means Aleksandar Cvetkovic, a Bosnian Serb who obtained Israeli citizenship through his wife, will stand trial in a Sarajevo war crimes court.

According to the ruling seen by the AFP news agency, Cverkovic is accused of "involvement in the offence of genocide during the massacre carried out in 1995 at Branjevo farm in the vicinity of the town of Srebrenica".

The ruling said Cvetkovic, 42, had 30 days to appeal to Israel’s Supreme Court and that he would be held in custody until his extradition.

He was arrested in January after Israel received an extradition request from the Bosnian authorities, who allege that Cvetkovic took part in the Srebrenica massacre, the single worst atrocity on European soil since World War II.

Cvetkovic was part of an eight-man firing squad that killed about 1,000 Bosnian Muslims at Branjevo farm, one of the locations for the massacre, in July 1995, according to the extradition request.

Cvetkovic, who served in the Bosnian Serb army during the war, emigrated to Israel in 2006 with his wife and children.
