Censorship Continues – Meta Restricts Use of Another Word

A campaign against Facebook censorship of pro-Palestine content. (Photo: File)

By Palestine Chronicle Staff

Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday that it will restrict the use of the term ‘Zionists’ when it refers to Israelis.

The company stated in a blog post that it will specifically target content attacking ‘Zionists’ when it is not clearly about the political movement.

The word ‘Zionist’, according to Meta, “has layers of meaning based on its origins and usage today, and may also be highly dependent on context”.

The post explains that, according to Meta, based on their “research, engagement, and on-platform investigation” the term is used as “a proxy term for Jewish people and Israelis in relation to certain types of hateful attacks”.

Israel’s Targeting of Pro-Palestinian Voices has Grown More Pernicious since Oct 7 – Analysis

The British newspaper The Guardian quoted advocate for digital rights and social entrepreneur Nadim Nashif as saying that “Shadow-banning is just one of the many ways in which we have seen Palestinian content silenced and censored over the last week.”

Instagram users have accused the platform of censoring posts that support Palestine, raising further concerns about content moderation.

The policy update reportedly comes after consultations with 145 stakeholders from civil society and academia around the world and amid Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

The social media giant has faced longstanding criticism over its handling of content related to Palestine.

We Can Defeat the Lobby – ILAN PAPPE

These criticisms have intensified since the onset of the war, with rights groups accusing Meta of suppressing pro-Palestinian content on Facebook and Instagram.

“Meta’s content moderation policies and systems have increasingly silenced voices in support of Palestine on Instagram and Facebook in the wake of the hostilities between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups,” Human Rights Watch stated in a report last December.

“Human Rights Watch identified six key patterns of censorship, each recurring in at least 100 instances,” the report added, listing them as “content removals, suspension or deletion of accounts, inability to engage with content, inability to follow or tag accounts, restrictions on the use of features such as Instagram/Facebook Live, and ‘shadow banning’, a term denoting a significant decrease in the visibility of an individual’s posts, stories, or account without notification.”

‘Like Guantanamo Bay’ – Released Detainee Speaks of Torture in Israeli Prison

Palestinian detainee Muazzam Khalil Abayat after detention in an Israeli prison. (Photo: via social media)

By Palestine Chronicle Staff

“The Negev Prison is like Guantanamo Bay. Everything is beyond what the mind can imagine.”

After nine months in Israeli detention, Palestinian detainee Muazzaz Khalil Abayat was barely recognizable, having endured daily beatings and abuse.

“Since the moment of my arrest until today, I have been severely beaten,” Abayat, 37, said after being released from the Negev (Naqab) prison on Tuesday.

The Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said in a statement that “Abayat was released from the Negev prison in a grave and shocking health condition,” adding that he “was subjected to a series of vicious assaults, including torture and starvation.”

The brutal assaults included “the breaking of all his limbs,” the PPS said, pointing out that Abayat, reported to be a former boxer, did not suffer any health problems before his arrest.

‘Ben-Gvir Danced on My Body’

In footage shared on social media, Abayat is seen limping and unable to walk upright, with an injury to his right arm.

“I was stabbed on December 4. I was subjected to attempted murder in Ofer prison, and (Itamar) Ben-Gvir danced on my body,” he said in a video posted by the Institute for Middle East Understanding. “They announced my death on December 4, and I woke up to find myself in Al-Ramla Prison hospital. I didn’t receive any treatment, the situation is horribly bad.”

‘Death Penalty a Solution’ – Ben-Gvir Adamant On Overcrowding in Israeli Prisons

“The Negev Prison is like Guantanamo Bay. Everything is beyond what the mind can imagine,” Abayat stated.

He said 2,000 prisoners are facing “severe illnesses and extremely harsh conditions.”

‘Criminal Behavior’ – Hamas

The Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas has said the condition of Abayat and other recently released detainees “confirm the extent of the severe violations and heinous crimes committed” in Israeli prisons and detention centers.

“What detainee Moazaz Abayat mentioned about the participation of the terrorist Ben-Gvir in the brutal torture operations himself confirms the level of sadism he and members of this extremist and fascist government possess,” the movement said in a statement on Wednesday.

“The suffering endured by our prisoners in occupation prisons far exceeds the brutality faced by detainees in Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib prison, proving that the occupation government and its army are devoid of ethics and have disregarded all international agreements and laws regarding the treatment of prisoners.”

Call to ICJ

Hamas said Israel’s  “criminal behavior…. necessitates immediate intervention from the international community, the International Court of Justice, the United Nations and its institutions.”

It urged “the formation of committees to enter these detention centers, investigate the violations committed therein, and bring the war criminals among the occupation leaders to international justice and hold them accountable for these crimes.”

Gaza Detainees Injected with Unknown Substance as Torture Escalates – Euro-Med Monitor

Abayat is the nephew of Hussein Abayat, one of the founders of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in the southern West Bank, according to the PPS. Abayat was killed during the Second Intifada (uprising) in 2000.

Abayat’s case is not an isolated one, with scores of testimonies from released prisoners pointing to torture and abuse inside Israeli detention camps and prisons.

Euro-Med Report

In a recent report, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said testimonies from released Gaza detainees have revealed an escalation of abuse and torture including prisoners being forcibly injected with an unknown substance.

The recently released Director of al-Shifa Hospital, Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, spoke about the horrifying reality facing detainees, noting that “prisoners in Israeli jails endure different types of torture.”

“The army treats them as if they were inanimate objects, and Israeli doctors physically assaulted us,” he said.

‘Worse than Abu Ghraib’ – This is How Israel Tortures Its Palestinian Hostages

He also stated that no international organizations were permitted to visit inmates, nor were they allowed access to lawyers, while the Palestinian prisoners were subjected to “severe torture and almost daily assaults inside the prisons and were denied medical treatments”.

According to statistics from various Palestinian organizations including the PPS and Addameer Association for Human Rights, a total of 9,600 Palestinians, including women and children, have been arrested across the West Bank and East Jerusalem since October 7.

By Palestine Chronicle Staff

A young Palestinian man was shot and critically wounded in the head and neck by Israeli forces in Tulkarm, and a child shot and wounded in Nablus, as several military raids were conducted across the occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces also stormed the Tal Al-Sultan Camp in Areeha, the town of Salfit, Biddu Al-Qubeiba, northwest of Jerusalem and Husan, southwest of Bethlehem on Wednesday, according to Palestinian sources.

In Tulkarm, Israeli military forces including snipers stationed on one of the buildings fired heavily during the raid on the town, wounding the young man, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.

In Beit Furik, east of Nablus, a 14-year-old Palestinian child was shot in the foot during clashes that erupted following a raid in the area.

Fertilizer Seized

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades said in a statement that it confronted an incursion of Israeli forces into the Ras al-Ain area of Nablus, and engaged in intense clashes. They also confronted invading troops in the Thannaba suburb and the outskirts of Tulkarm camp.

In Thannaba, Israeli forces stormed a store selling agricultural materials and seized large quantities of fertilizer.

West Bank Escalations – Israeli Forces Kill Palestinian Child, Injure Three

They also seized fertilizers in the town of Sarda, north of Ramallah, as well as in the town of Salfit.

WAFA reported that Israeli forces posted leaflets warning farmers against using fertilizers.

Armed clashes also occurred between resistance fighters and invading occupation forces in the Dheisheh camp in Bethlehem.

Homes Raided

Israeli occupation forces also raided a number of homes in the town of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron (Al Khalil).

A witness told WAFA that the occupation forces stormed the town with a large number of military vehicles and deployed in the Safa area in the north.

Soldiers raided a number of homes after breaking down doors and throwing sound bombs inside the dwellings, sparking panic amongst the children.

Israeli forces also stormed Ain Sultan camp, in the city of Jericho, reported WAFA.

Soldiers closed the southern and northern entrances to those exiting the city, and stopped several vehicles.

Water Well Filled

Israeli occupation forces on Wednesday filled an underground water well in the village of Tayasir, east of Tubas, reported WAFA.

Human rights activist Arif Daraghmeh said that the soldiers filled the well of resident Suleiman Khudairat in Al-Batoun area, and seized a well-drilling machine in the area.

The occupation forces also raided the village of Aqaba, east of Tubas.

Al-Aqsa Raid

Illegal Jewish settlers, under the protection of Israeli police, on Wednesday morning broke into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem.

Witnesses said that dozens of settlers entered the holy site in groups, conducted provocative tours throughout the compound, and performed Talmudic rituals.

During the incursion, Israeli police imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshippers to the mosque.

Additionally, Israeli police intensified the restrictions at the gates of the Old City, effectively turning the area into a military zone.

Israeli raids on the West Bank have intensified since Israel launched its genocidal war on the Gaza Strip which has killed more than 38,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.

No More Exemptions – Israeli Military to Issue Draft Orders to Ultra-Orthodox Jews

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. (Design: Palestine Chronicle)

By Palestine Chronicle Staff

Last month, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled that the Haredi must be conscripted into the army and that financial aid should be withheld from religious institutions whose students do not comply with military service requirements.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and the military have agreed to begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jews from next month, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The paper noted the exact number of draft orders to be issued was not indicated. However, the military said that “it could immediately integrate around 3,000 ultra-Orthodox men, in addition to the around 1,800 it already has.”

“Gallant approved the army’s recommendation to issue draft orders to members of the Haredi community next month,” the Defense Ministry statement said in a statement, according to the Anadolu news agency.

The statement did not specify the number of ultra-Orthodox Jews (or Haredi) to be drafted.

The Jerusalem Post said, “The 3,000 is out of a class of around 10,000–12,000 per academic year, with over 60,000 Haredi potentially in play from several academic years.”

There was no immediate comment from Israeli religious parties on the decision, Anadolu said.

Supreme Court Mandate – Ultra-Orthodox Jews Must Serve in the Army

Supreme Court Ruling

Last month, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled that the Haredi must be conscripted into the army and that financial aid should be withheld from religious institutions whose students do not comply with military service requirements.

Haredi Jews, who make up about 13% of Israel’s population of approximately 9.9 million, do not serve in the military, citing a commitment to study the Torah, Judaism’s holy book.

Israeli law requires every Israeli citizen over the age of 18 to serve in the military, while the exemption of Haredi from service has been a controversial issue for decades.

The Times of Israel reports that an estimated 67,000 Haredi males are eligible for military service.

Staggering Death Toll

Currently on trial before the International Court of Justice for genocide against Palestinians, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, 38,243 Palestinians have been killed, and 88,033 wounded. Moreover, at least 11,000 people are unaccounted for, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes throughout the Strip.

Genocide Continues – Children among Dozens Killed in Latest Israeli Airstrikes

Israel says that 1,200 soldiers and civilians were killed during the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation on October 7. Israeli media published reports suggesting that many Israelis were killed on that day by ‘friendly fire’.

Palestinian and international organizations say that the majority of those killed and wounded are women and children.

The Israeli war has resulted in an acute famine, mostly in northern Gaza, resulting in the death of many Palestinians, mostly children.

The Israeli aggression has also resulted in the forceful displacement of nearly two million people from all over the Gaza Strip, with the vast majority of the displaced forced into the densely crowded southern city of Rafah near the border with Egypt – in what has become Palestine’s largest mass exodus since the 1948 Nakba.

Later in the war, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians began moving from the south to central Gaza in a constant search for safety.

‘Immeasurable Failure’ – Gaza’s Women Self-Inducing Labor, Giving Birth in Traumatic Conditions

By Palestine Chronicle Staff

“It’s an immeasurable political failure that this war has ground on for nine months – the same time it has taken for a mother to survive a full-term pregnancy, or for a baby to learn to crawl.”

An estimated 50,000 babies have been born in the Gaza Strip over nine months of conflict, with some women self-inducing labor to avoid giving birth on the move while others are scared to seek vital prenatal care because of fears of bombing, according to the Save the Children organization.

Many women are “giving birth in traumatic, unhygienic and undignified conditions without access to basic services,” and some have lost their lives due to a lack of access to doctors, the organization said earlier this week.

“We’ve seen the continuous stress and misery taking a toll on women, with some making drastic choices such as self-inducing labor using medication out of fear they might lose their babies if they have to flee again for survival,” Sharifa Khan, a midwife with Save the Children’s Emergency Unit said.

Gaza Genocide – On Mainstream Feminism’s Disregard for the Rights of Other Women

Khan said one woman was rushed to the maternity unit with serious obstetric complications after self-medicating before term.

“The medication caused her uterus to overstretch and rupture, leading to severe bleeding and a distressed fetus,” she explained.

While the team was able to manage the case, had the mother been delayed by just a few minutes in reaching the maternity unit, “the baby’s life could have been lost or the baby could have been born with disabilities due to prolonged lack of circulation. The woman might have lost her life too.”

Untreated Infections

The midwife mentioned another mother who delivered her child safely and was discharged the following day.

However, she was back three days later when her baby was lethargic, had a high temperature, was refusing to breastfeed, and had a swollen umbilical cord that was discharging pus.

“This condition is only common in places with poor hygiene and a lack of clean water. It can be life-threatening if untreated as the infection can spread to the bloodstream,” Khan emphasized. “Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case.”

Urgent Action Needed – 150,000 Pregnant Women in Gaza Suffer amid Ongoing Genocide

Pregnant women were facing significant challenges, including a lack of food and clean water, frequent displacement, the traumatic loss of loved ones, and the fear of injury or death.

One mother reported to Save the Children that she had not eaten meat for five months of her pregnancy and lost weight in the final months before giving birth.

In addition, power blackouts pose extreme risks to critically ill babies, including those in incubators.

Premature Labor

“The Gaza we see today is no place for a child to be born. We know that prolonged exposure to stress and trauma, coupled with substandard medical facilities, can lead to premature labour and death of newborns,” Rachel Cummings, Save the Children’s Team Leader in Gaza, said.

She added, “It’s an immeasurable political failure that this war has ground on for nine months – the same time it has taken for a mother to survive a full-term pregnancy, or for a baby to learn to crawl.”

‘Critical Shortages’ – UN Says Access Limitations Hampering Entry of Fuel, Aid into Gaza

Any woman who has become pregnant during this time “will have only known fear, trauma, deprivation, and displacement,” the team leader added.

“Any mother who has given birth will have done so lacking the critical support all women need to deliver safely. And any baby born – who manages to survive these conditions – will only have known war,” she stressed.

Cummings called for “an immediate and definitive ceasefire as the only way to save lives in Gaza and end the relentless, serious violations of children’s rights. There is no alternative.”

Over 38,000 Killed

‘Enough of the Government Destruction’ – Nine Protesters Arrested in Tel Aviv

The police reportedly intervened to clear the highway of the protesters and arrested nine of them.

The Israeli police arrested on Wednesday nine protesters after they blocked a highway near Tel Aviv, demanding early elections and a prisoner swap deal with the Palestinian Resistance.

The protesters holding a big banner reading “Enough of the government of destruction” blocked traffic on the Morasha Junction, and burned tires on the road, according to Anadolu news agency.

The police reportedly intervened to clear the highway of the protesters and arrested nine of them.

In recent weeks, Israeli opposition parties – along with families of Israeli captives held in Gaza – escalated protests to pressure the Israeli government to go for a prisoner swap deal with the Hamas group.

Indirect talks have resumed this week in both Cairo and Doha as Israeli delegations were dispatched to both capitals.

So far, efforts to secure a truce were not successful, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists on continuing the war until the full defeat of the Hamas group in Gaza.
